  • Employer: Home Instead (Markham/Thornhill Franchise).

  • Location: Markham and Thornhill, ON (In-home care).

  • Status: Part-time / Internship (Variety of morning, afternoon, and evening shifts).

  • Compensation: Starting at $19.50 per hour.

  • Transportation: Must possess a valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle, and auto insurance.

  • Perks: Paid mileage, 24-hour administrative support, and on-going paid training.


Key Responsibilities: The “Holistic Support” Cycle

You provide the essential “non-medical” bridge that allows seniors to remain independent and socially active.

  • Companionship & Vitality: Engage in active conversation and social interaction to stimulate the client’s mental health and reduce isolation.

  • Domestic Assistance: Perform light housekeeping tasks and meal preparation to maintain a safe, organized, and nutritious home environment.

  • Mobility & Errands: Provide transportation for seniors, assisting with grocery shopping, pharmacy trips, and general errands.

  • Health Coordination: Offer medication and appointment reminders to ensure the client stays on track with their wellness plan.

  • Specialized Alzheimer’s Care: Utilize Home Instead’s training to provide a calm, supportive environment for clients with memory impairment.


Candidate Profile & Qualifications

  • Communicative Wit: Extremely strong communication skills are required to build trust with clients and their families.

  • Compliance: Ability to complete a criminal background check and maintain valid vehicle documentation.


Technical Insights: The Home Instead Care Model

Even without prior experience, you will be trained in “Person-Centered” care techniques used globally by Home Instead.

  • Social Prescribing & Engagement: You will learn to identify “Interests and Hobbies” that can be used as tools to improve a senior’s cognitive function and mood.

  • Safe Transport Protocols: Mastering “Assisted Entry and Exit” for vehicles, ensuring seniors with mobility aids are seated and buckled safely.

  • Alzheimer’s Communication: Learning “Redirection” techniques—shifting a client’s focus away from a distressing thought or confusion without causing conflict.

  • Medication Reminder Systems: Understanding the difference between “Administration” (which you do not do) and “Reminders” (verbal or visual cues) to maintain safety and compliance.

  • Ergonomics of Light Housekeeping: Using proper body mechanics to perform chores like dusting or laundry to prevent personal injury.
