The Personal Care Assistant / Support Worker role at RecAbility is a specialized “Functional & Respiratory Support” position in Toronto. Status: Part-time, Casual, or Seasonal (Contractor options).
Salary: $22.00 – $24.00 per hour.
Training: Full training provided for respiratory device setup.
Core Focus: Adult wheelchair user support and rehabilitation.
Key Responsibilities: The “Functional Independence” Cycle
You provide the physical and technical bridge that allows the client to navigate their daily routine safely.
Respiratory Management: Set up and monitor specialized respiratory devices; you will be the first line of defense in ensuring oxygenation and airway clearance (training included).
Rehabilitation Support: Assist with ongoing physical therapy and rehabilitation routines to maintain muscle tone and joint mobility.
Mobility Assistance: Support the client with functional tasks and transfers, ensuring safe movement for a full-time wheelchair user.
Environment Optimization: Maintain a highly organized, “barrier-free” home environment to ensure the client’s safety and comfort.
Respectful Communication: Act as a proactive communicator, anticipating needs before they become urgent and supporting the client’s daily autonomy.
Candidate Profile & Qualifications
The “Attentive Caretaker”: Someone who is highly observant and proactive, capable of noticing subtle changes in a client’s respiratory or physical state.
Interpersonal Wit: Excellent communication skills, likely honed in customer service, hospitality, or previous caregiving roles.
Technical Grit: The ability to follow complex medical instructions carefully and remain calm while operating life-support equipment.
Task-Oriented Mindset: Thrives in an environment where specific, hands-on duties are the priority.
Technical Insights: Respiratory & Mobility Support
Supporting a wheelchair user with respiratory needs involves specific technical competencies.
Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV): You may assist with devices like CPAP or BiPAP machines. Understanding how to ensure a proper mask seal is vital for effective therapy.
Airway Clearance Techniques: You might be trained in using a Cough Assist machine or performing manual chest physiotherapy to help clear lung secretions.
Wheelchair Ergonomics & Pressure Relief: For a full-time user, “Pressure Mapping” is key. You will assist the client in shifting weight every 15–30 minutes to prevent skin breakdown.
Transfer Safety: Mastering “Low-Pivot” or “Slide Board” transfers. These techniques minimize the risk of falls during transitions between the wheelchair, bed, or shower.
