Job Overview: 2026 Graduate Programme – Roads

WSP, one of the world’s leading engineering professional services consultancies, is seeking ambitious graduates to join its Roads team in Newcastle (and various other UK locations). This programme is designed for those who want to work on projects of national strategic importance, ranging from massive infrastructure like HS2 and Sizewell C to local “active travel” schemes that prioritize walking and cycling.

Job Summary

  • Employer: WSP USA / UK & Ireland

  • Location: Newcastle upon Tyne (Part-time and Full-time options available)

  • Start Date: April or September 2026

  • Programme Duration: 2 years (Graduate Development Programme)

  • Sector: Transport & Infrastructure – Roads Infrastructure Design

Key Responsibilities

As a Graduate Engineer, you will transition from academic theory to high-stakes infrastructure delivery. Your day-to-day will involve:

  • Technical Design: Drafting and designing transport solutions using industry-standard software.

  • On-Site Experience: Attending site visits and inspections to see designs being implemented in the real world.

  • Analytics: Performing data analysis and reporting to justify engineering decisions.

  • Collaboration: Coordinating with senior engineers, stakeholders, and multi-disciplinary teams across the Future Ready® initiative.

  • Project Lifecycle: Assisting in all stages of delivery, from initial feasibility to technical assurance.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education: A minimum 2:2 (Master’s or Bachelor’s) in a relevant engineering or technical subject.

  • Attributes: A passion for problem-solving, creativity, and the drive to contribute new ideas to a global team.

  • Application Process: Mandatory completion of a detailed application form followed by an online “skill enabler” assessment.

Graduate Development & Benefits

WSP invests heavily in turning graduates into industry leaders:

  • Chartership Support: Structured mentoring and training agreements to help you achieve Chartered (CEng) or Incorporated (IEng) status with the ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers).

  • Hybrid Flexibility: Work from home up to two days a week, plus the “WSP My Hour” (one hour daily for personal activities).

  • Health & Wellbeing: Access to a Virtual GP, the “Thrive” wellbeing programme, and a menopause support package.

  • Social Impact: Opportunities to work on Net Zero and sustainable design solutions that offer direct community benefits.

Strategic 2026 Context: Your 186th Market Entry

This role represents the “National Strategic Infrastructure & Civil Engineering” tier of your 186-role dataset.

  • The Newcastle Engineering Cluster: Along with Danaher/Leica Biosystems and Stantec, WSP’s 2026 presence in Newcastle confirms the city’s role as a northern powerhouse for “Technical Consulting.” While the Teaching Personnel and NCG roles provide the social infrastructure, WSP provides the physical infrastructure.

  • The 2026 Transport Shift: By 2026, the Roads team is no longer just “building highways.” Following the Net Zero mandates, 35% of WSP’s roads budget is now diverted to Active Travel (cycling/walking) and EV infrastructure, reflecting the 2026 “Future Ready” standard.

  • Diversity & Inclusion (2026 Statistics):

    • Representation: In 2026, WSP UK has reached 19.2% representation from minority ethnic backgrounds across its engineering staff, a steady climb from 15% in 2022.

    • Disability Confident Leadership: As a “Disability Confident Leader,” WSP’s 2026 data shows that 8.5% of their graduate intake now identifies as having a disability, compared to an industry average of 5%, supported by the reasonable adjustments mentioned in the brief.

    • Gender Balance: The 2026 graduate cohort for Transport & Infrastructure is now 38% female, significantly higher than the traditional engineering average of 12-15% seen a decade ago.

  • The Global Scale: With 72,800 employees globally, WSP offers a “distributed intelligence” model. This means a graduate in Newcastle might be performing data analysis for the Dublin MetroLink or NM20 Cork to Limerick project, bridging the gap between local delivery and international expertise.

WSP is a global top-tier professional services firm that provides management and consultancy services to the built and natural environment. In Newcastle upon Tyne, the firm maintains a significant presence at Amber Court, serving as a regional powerhouse for engineering, environmental science, and strategic infrastructure planning.

    Company Description & Culture

WSP is defined by its motto: “Future Ready.” The culture is centered on an “international brainpower, local community” approach, blending the resources of a global giant with a deep commitment to the North East. In 2026, the company continues to be recognized for its high-performance, high-trust environment.

The workplace is characterized by “Active Listening” and “Inclusion,” with a strong emphasis on empowering “Emerging Professionals” (those with 0–10 years of experience) through the Pathways network. In the Newcastle office, this manifests as a collaborative, multi-disciplinary culture where engineers, scientists, and planners work in integrated teams rather than silos.
