About the Company

Challenge Preparatory Charter School, established in 2010, serves over 1,200 scholars across three sites in Far Rockaway, Queens. As a K-12 institution, Challenge Prep is dedicated to bridging the achievement gap in historically underserved communities. The organization provides a “whole-child” developmental approach, combining rigorous academics with aesthetic, social, and ethical cultivation. Known for its supportive and technology-infused environment, Challenge Prep emphasizes collaborative decision-making and professional growth, ensuring both students and staff have the resources to excel as 21st-century citizens.

Market & Industry Context

The “Allied Health” sector is one of the fastest-growing industries in the New York metropolitan area. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, healthcare occupations are projected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2032. In New York City, particularly in Queens, there is a critical need for localized “pipeline” programs that prepare high school students for entry-level certifications (such as CNA, EMT, or EKG Technician).

Teachers in this role act as the primary link between traditional secondary education and the professional medical workforce, directly addressing the regional shortage of healthcare professionals by empowering local youth with marketable, life-saving skills.

Career Growth & Progression Path

Challenge Prep prioritizes internal development and reflective leadership:

  • Instructional Coaching: Teachers receive ongoing coaching and weekly professional development to refine their pedagogical craft.

  • Committee Leadership: Opportunities to sit on strategic planning and organizational decision-making committees.

  • Curriculum Design: Lead roles in shaping the long-term Allied Health Science roadmap for the high school site.

  • Departmental Advancement: Potential for transition into Department Chair or Career and Technical Education (CTE) Coordinator roles as the school continues to expand its vocational offerings.

Interview Preparation Insights

  • Clinical to Classroom Transition: Be prepared to discuss how you translate complex medical procedures or biological concepts into “scholar-friendly” language without losing technical accuracy.

  • Scenario-Based Management: You will likely be asked how you maintain safety and professional decorum during hands-on clinical lab simulations.

  • Culturally Responsive Pedagogy: Prepare to discuss your experience working with underserved populations and how you incorporate students’ identities into your health science instruction.

  • Inquiry-Based Discussion: Practice leading a mock discussion where you guide students to discover a biological or health-related concept through questioning rather than direct lecturing.

Estimated Salary Insight

Market Estimate Based on Similar Roles: $65,000 – $95,000 per year. Note: At Challenge Prep, salaries are set through an equity lens and vary significantly based on the specific healthcare license held (e.g., RN vs. Paramedic), years of clinical experience, and NYS certification status.

Work Environment & Location Insights

Far Rockaway, Queens is a unique coastal community that faces specific geographical and socioeconomic challenges. The school environment is described as “technology-infused and data-enriched,” meaning teachers are expected to use real-time student performance metrics to drive their instruction. The staff culture is highly collaborative; as a “multi-site” organization, you will interact with educators across different grade levels to ensure a seamless K-12 transition for scholars.
