Job Summary

The Technician – Advanced, Line Technician at Bell Canada is a high-skill “Infrastructure & Connectivity” role within the Field Operations team in Québec City. This position requires the “wit” to interpret complex engineering plans and fiber/copper schematics, and the “grit” to perform physically demanding aerial and underground work in all weather conditions. You are the literal architect of the network, ensuring that Bell’s world-class voice and data services remain uninterrupted for residential and business markets across Quebec.

  • Employer: Bell Canada (Team Bell).

  • Location: Québec City, Quebec.

  • Status: Full-time (Subject to Craft and Services bargaining unit collective agreement).

  • Salary: $60,000 – $80,000 a year.

  • Education: College diploma in Electronics/Telecommunications (or equivalent experience).

  • License: Valid Class 1 Driver’s License is required.


Key Responsibilities: The “Outside Plant” Lifecycle

You are responsible for the physical construction and repair of the network that powers Canada’s digital infrastructure.

  • Network Repair: Troubleshoot and repair both aerial (pole-mounted) and underground (manhole/conduit) fiber optic and copper networks.

  • Project Execution: Plan and execute complex installation projects based on engineering plans and Methods of Procedure (MOP).

  • Line Activities: Perform heavy-duty line work, including placing underground, aerial, and buried cables.

  • Professional Representation: Act as the face of Bell when interacting with the public, customers, and third-party contractors.

  • Technical Analysis: Use software tools (e.g., G-Mobile viewer) to look up cable plans and interpret intricate network schematics.


Candidate Profile & Qualifications

  • The “Field Specialist”: Someone with intermediate knowledge of outside plant specifications (conduits, strands, poles, splices) and telephone network structures.

  • Technical Wit: Ability to differentiate colored wires (color code) and read/understand technical documents and work plans autonomously.

  • Physical Grit: Capable of climbing telephone poles, carrying heavy ladders, entering manholes, and lifting significant weight.

  • Operational Flexibility: Must be willing to work variable schedules (evenings, nights, weekends) and participate in a standby/on-call program.

  • Safety Mindset: Strict adherence to safety requirements while working with hand tools and heavy equipment in restricted-movement areas.


Technical Insights: The Architecture of Connectivity

Line Technicians at Bell work with the fundamental components of modern telecommunications.

  • Fiber vs. Copper Splicing: You will manage the transition from legacy copper networks to high-speed Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) architecture.

  • Outside Plant (OSP) Components: You must master the installation of “strands” (supporting wires) and “splices” that protect the integrity of data transmission over long distances.

  • G-Mobile & Mapping: You will use GIS-based tools to locate underground conduits before excavation to prevent “service hits” or damage to existing infrastructure.
