Job Summary: Volunteer School Governor

Governors for Schools is seeking dedicated volunteers to join governing bodies at schools across Luton. Key Responsibilities

Strategic Oversight: Help set the school’s aims, values, and long-term vision.
Governance & Accountability: Ensure the school remains accountable for its performance and adheres to educational standards.
Leadership Support: Act as a “critical friend” to the Head Teacher, providing constructive challenge and support.
Operational Monitoring: Evaluate school progress, oversee the implementation of improvement plans, and ensure effective budgetary control.
Personnel: Participate in the appointment of senior staff members, including the Head Teacher.
Committee Participation: Contribute to specialized committees (e.g., finance, pupil achievement) to conduct deep dives into specific school matters before reporting back to the full governing body.

Requirements

Eligibility: Must be 18 years of age or older.
Background: No specific educational experience or parenting status is required.
Skills: While specific professional experience (HR, finance, law, project management) is highly valued, “soft skills” such as leadership, communication, and problem-solving are equally vital.
Perspective: A willingness to offer an objective, outside perspective to help the school grow and thrive.

Compensation and Commitment

Compensation: This is a volunteer role.
Flexibility: The role is Hybrid, involving visits to the school to engage with the culture, staff, and pupils, as well as attending governing body meetings.
