Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Oversight: Help set the school’s aims, values, and long-term vision.

  • Governance & Accountability: Ensure the school remains accountable for its performance and adheres to educational standards.

  • Leadership Support: Act as a “critical friend” to the Head Teacher, providing constructive challenge and support.

  • Operational Monitoring: Evaluate school progress, oversee the implementation of improvement plans, and ensure effective budgetary control.

  • Personnel: Participate in the appointment of senior staff members, including the Head Teacher.

  • Committee Participation: Contribute to specialized committees (e.g., finance, pupil achievement) to conduct deep dives into specific school matters before reporting back to the full governing body.

Requirements

  • Eligibility: Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Background: No specific educational experience or parenting status is required.

  • Skills: While specific professional experience (HR, finance, law, project management) is highly valued, “soft skills” such as leadership, communication, and problem-solving are equally vital.

  • Perspective: A willingness to offer an objective, outside perspective to help the school grow and thrive.
