No commercial driving experience is required, as First Student provides all the training needed to obtain your Class 2 license with an S-Endorsement (School Bus).

FAQs

  • Do I need a special license to apply? No. You only need a standard driver’s license (held for 3 years). First Student will train you and help you get your professional Class 2 license.

  • What is the “Child-Ride-Along” program? This is a rare perk that allows drivers to bring their own preschool-aged children on the bus with them, saving on childcare costs.

  • What are “Split Shifts”? You work when students go to school and when they come home. You are typically free between 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM.

  • Is the pay year-round? Generally, school bus drivers follow the school calendar (September–June). However, charter work is often available during the summer for those who want to keep working.

  • Is it a union job? Yes, reviews indicate that First Student in Edmonton is a unionized environment, providing structured wage increases and representation.

Expert Analysis

The $25.31/hr rate is significantly higher than most retail or warehouse part-time jobs in Alberta. However, you must account for the fact that you are usually only paid for “wheels-turning” time (roughly 4–5 hours a day). The Child-Ride-Along program is the “killer feature” of this job, making it a favorite for parents with young children. Be prepared for Edmonton winters—you’ll be the first one on the road during snow days!

Location & Logistics Guide

First Student has multiple yards in Edmonton (North and South). Your “start” location will depend on where your route is based. Because you’ll be driving a large vehicle, the company provides on-site parking for your personal vehicle while you are on your route.

Career Path

Driving a school bus is a great way to enter the Professional Transportation industry. Many drivers move into roles as Driver Trainers, Dispatchers, or Safety Managers. The Class 2 license you earn is also highly valuable for driving Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) buses or private motor coaches.
