Website The Headhunters

Job Summary

The Sales Representative – Industrial Ottawa role, managed by The Headhunters, is a high-level technical sales position focusing on temporary energy, power, and cooling solutions. As a “Technical Solutions Architect,” you will be responsible for designing and selling complex rental equipment setups to industrial facilities, power plants, and major construction sites. This role requires the “wit” to engage directly with engineers on technical specs and the “grit” to manage project delivery under the tight timelines common in the utilities and industrial sectors.

Job Details

  • Recruiter: The Headhunters (on behalf of an industrial solutions provider).

  • Location: Ottawa, ON (with a focus on the Ottawa/Sudbury industrial corridor).

  • Compensation: $85,000 – $90,000 base salary + lucrative commission.

  • First-Year Support: Includes a “commission bridge” to support you while building your pipeline.

  • Perks: Company vehicle, full benefits package, and a supportive team culture.

Key Responsibilities: The Technical Sales Lifecycle

You are the primary link between complex industrial needs and mobile equipment solutions.

  • Industrial Prospecting: Identify and service high-value facilities, including substations, power plants, and large-scale general construction projects.

  • Site Assessments: Lead on-site technical evaluations to determine specific cooling, power, or pumping requirements.

  • Technical Scoping: Partner with engineers and operators to design custom rental solutions (e.g., temporary cooling towers or backup power distribution).

  • Proposal Generation: Develop commercial proposals that balance technical accuracy with competitive pricing.

  • Project Delivery: Collaborate with operations teams to ensure equipment is delivered and commissioned according to client timelines.

  • CRM Management: Track all customer activities and market opportunities to maintain a healthy sales funnel.

Candidate Profile & Qualifications

  • The “Technical Closer”: 3–5 years of experience in technical sales or applications engineering is required.

  • Academic Foundation: A Bachelor’s degree is preferred, specifically in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • Sector Expertise: Proven experience in plant environments (utilities, industrial, or heavy construction) is essential.

  • Product Wit: Working knowledge of cooling towers, pumps, and power distribution systems.

  • Communication Grit: Ability to build trust with both site operators and high-level engineers.

Technical Insights: Temporary Utility Solutions

Selling in this sector requires an understanding of “Critical Infrastructure Redundancy.”

  • Peak Shaving & Emergency Power: You will often sell solutions for “Peak Shaving” (reducing load during high-demand periods) or emergency backup during planned substation maintenance.

  • Hydraulic and Thermal Calculations: Success in this role often involves basic calculations for flow rates (GPM) or cooling loads (Tons/BTUs) to ensure the rental equipment meets the facility’s heat-exchange requirements.

  • Logistical Coordination: Because these are rental solutions, you must understand the “Mobilization/Demobilization” process, including the logistics of transporting heavy equipment to remote or restricted industrial sites.

Diversity and The Ottawa Industrial Market

Ottawa’s industrial landscape is a unique mix of government utilities, high-tech manufacturing, and regional infrastructure.

  • The Utility Corridor: Ottawa serves as a hub for Eastern Ontario’s power distribution. Sales representatives in this sector play a key role in maintaining the reliability of the regional grid.

  • Bilingual Advantage: While not explicitly listed, the ability to communicate in both English and French is a massive asset when dealing with utility providers that operate across the Ontario/Quebec border.

  • Economic Stability: The industrial sales sector in Ottawa remains robust, with a 4.2% projected growth in infrastructure spending through 2027, ensuring a steady stream of new construction and retrofit projects.

  • Women in Technical Sales: The Headhunters and the industrial sector at large are increasingly focused on diversifying the “Technical Sales” talent pool, encouraging qualified candidates from all backgrounds to apply.

The Headhunters: Setting a New Standard in Strategic Talent

The Headhunters is a specialized recruitment firm defined by a culture of respect, integrity, and social conscience. Their mission is to “set a new standard in recruitment by genuinely respecting the people we partner with,” moving beyond simple “role-filling” to act as strategic consultants. The internal environment is values-driven and flexible, operating as a fully remote team that prioritizes the physical and mental well-being of its consultants. They focus on finding “the talent that no one else can,” often targeting passive candidates who are not actively seeking new roles but represent the top tier of their respective industries.

In Ottawa and across Canada, The Headhunters operates as a modern, high-touch agency integrated into the Humanis Advisory Group:

  • Fully Remote Model: While they serve the Ottawa market and the National Capital Region with local expertise, the firm operates without a centralized physical office. This allows their consultants to be “on the ground” where the talent is, providing coast-to-coast coverage for North American clients.

  • Specialized Verticals: The firm avoids a “generalist” approach, instead utilizing consultants who are subject matter experts in specific fields, including:

    • Accounting & Finance: From CPA-level roles to specialized tax and audit positions.

    • Engineering & Operations: Focused on the technical leadership needed for Canada’s industrial sectors.

    • Executive & Senior Management: Navigating the complexities of C-suite placements.

    • Technology & Sales: Tapping into the high-growth sectors dominant in Ottawa’s business parks.

  • The “Science” of the Match: A core part of their culture is the use of TalentClick psychometric assessments. By utilizing the “Workstyle & Performance Profile,” they aim to reduce turnover by ensuring a candidate’s personality and cognitive style align with the hiring company’s unique culture.

  • Social Conscience: Giving back is a foundational value. The firm and its employees regularly donate time and resources to community initiatives, ranging from the BC Children’s Hospital to Hope Mission, reflecting their commitment to being a “business with a heart.”

Working with The Headhunters in Ottawa means engaging with a team that values transparency and long-term retention. Whether you are an employer looking for a “hard-to-find” lead engineer or a professional looking for a confidential career pivot, their approach is defined by “headhunting with a human touch”—prioritizing the “Art and Science” of the perfect professional fit.
