Job Description

Position: Retail Warehouse & Production Associate

Organization: Value Village Stores Ltd. (Savers family)

Value Village is a pioneer in the “Thrift Proud” movement, purchasing donated items from local non-profits to fund community programs while keeping billions of pounds of waste out of landfills. As a Production Associate, you are the engine of the store. You work “behind the scenes” in the warehouse to sort, grade, and price the thousands of unique items that arrive daily, ensuring the sales floor is constantly refreshed with “new” secondhand treasures.

Primary Task Accountabilities

Merchandise Processing (Back-of-House)

  • Sorting & Grading: Review incoming donations to identify high-quality items. Categorize products into clothing, housewares, books, or “hard goods.”

  • Pricing: Assign value-based pricing to items according to company standards and condition.

  • Tagging: Affix price tags and security sensors to prepared merchandise.

  • Quota Management: Work efficiently in a fast-paced environment to meet daily “pieces-per-hour” processing goals.

Warehouse Logistics

  • Material Handling: Safely unload donation trucks and move large bins of unsorted product using manual equipment.

  • Safety & Organization: Maintain a clean, hazard-free warehouse space. Adhere to safety protocols regarding heavy lifting and equipment use.

It requires someone who enjoys a fast-paced “factory-style” workflow where you can see the immediate results of your work.

FAQs

  • What is the work environment like? It is a “warehouse in a store.” It can be dusty and physically demanding, but it offers a structured schedule and a sense of accomplishment.

  • Are there employee discounts? Yes, team members typically receive a significant discount (up to 50%) on store merchandise.

  • Do I need a degree? No degree is required. They value unique backgrounds and a “thrift proud” attitude.

Expert Analysis

The “Production Associate” role is the heart of Value Village’s profitability. Success in this role depends on “Speed to Floor”—how quickly you can get a donation sorted and priced. Unlike standard retail, your “customers” are the production quotas. If you are a “treasure hunter” who loves seeing unique items before anyone else and enjoys active work, this is an excellent fit. However, be prepared for high-pressure quotas during peak donation seasons.

Location & Logistics Guide

The Whyte Ave (82nd Ave) location is one of the busiest in Edmonton. It is situated in a high-density, trendy area with excellent transit access (ETS routes 4, 8, and 501). Parking for staff is available, but the area is often congested, so transit is a popular choice for team members.
