The Personal Support Worker (PSW) Trainee program at SE Health is a unique, “Earn-while-you-learn” initiative designed for individuals in Ottawa looking to break into the healthcare sector. As a “Care Architect in Training,” you will transition from a passionate community member to a certified healthcare professional through a structured 6-month sponsored program. This role requires the “wit” to master complex clinical skills through virtual and in-person labs and the “grit” to provide compassionate, hands-on care to vulnerable populations in their own homes.


Job Details

  • Employer: SE Health (A national not-for-profit social enterprise with 115+ years of history).

  • Location: Ottawa, ON (Community-based care).

  • Training Wage: $19.05 per hour during the initial 5-week intensive.

  • Program Duration: 6 months total (5 weeks initial training, followed by 4 months of virtual learning and 3 weeks of skills labs/placements).

  • Status: Paid training transitioning into part-time community work.


Key Responsibilities: The Training & Care Lifecycle

You will evolve through a hybrid model of education and practical application.

  • Foundational Training: Attend paid sessions (Monday–Friday, 11 AM – 4 PM) covering personal care, household management, and general support.

  • Community Integration: After the first 5 weeks, begin working part-time in the community, applying your skills under supervision while continuing your virtual education.

  • Clinical Skills Lab: Participate in 3 weeks of intensive, in-person labs to master manual handling and medical assistance techniques.

  • Patient Support: Provide essential daily living assistance, including hygiene care, meal preparation, and emotional support to seniors and those with disabilities.

  • Safety Monitoring: Demonstrate a sharp eye for recognizing safety concerns in a patient’s home environment and reporting changes in health status.


Candidate Profile & Qualifications

  • The “Compassionate Communicator”: Friendly, calm under pressure, and a strong verbal/written communicator.

  • The “Mobile Caregiver”: A valid G or G2 driver’s license and a reliable vehicle are mandatory for traveling between clients in the Ottawa area.

  • Day-One Readiness: Must have Standard First Aid and Level C CPR certification before starting.

  • Health Compliance: Proof of immunizations (MMR, HepB, etc.) and a negative TB test from the last 6 months.

  • Clearance: A clear Police Check and Vulnerable Sector Check are required upon a job offer.


Technical Insights: The PSW Scope of Practice

Becoming a PSW involves learning the “Activities of Daily Living” (ADL) framework used across Ontario’s healthcare system.

  • ADL Support: You will learn to assist with “Activities of Daily Living,” which include bathing, dressing, toileting, and feeding, ensuring the patient’s dignity is always preserved.

  • Safe Transfers: You will be trained in “Body Mechanics” and the use of assistive devices (like Hoyer lifts) to move patients safely without injuring yourself or them.

  • Virtual Learning Tools: SE Health provides a Tablet and Virtual Textbook, allowing you to engage with modern medical theory from home.

  • Documentation: You will use a mobile device to log patient visits and track care plans, ensuring real-time communication with the clinical leadership team.
