Job Summary

The Personal Support Worker (Casual Summer Agency Contract) with Hero Care is a high-impact, flexible role serving long-term care (LTC) facilities throughout the Greater Toronto Area. Operating as a “Frontline Hero,” you provide essential geriatric care, ensuring the dignity and safety of residents during the busy summer season. This role requires the “wit” to identify subtle clinical changes in residents and the “grit” to manage the physical demands of a high-pressure healthcare environment under an agency model.

Job Details

  • Employer: Hero Care (Staffing Agency).

  • Location: Various Long-Term Care facilities across the GTA.

  • Wage: $25.00 per hour.

  • Position Type: Casual / Summer Agency Contract.

  • Supervision: Reports to a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN).

Key Responsibilities

  • Total Personal Care: Provide assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including bathing, toileting, perineal care, dressing, and grooming.

  • Clinical Monitoring: Observe and report any substantial behavioral or clinical changes to the registered nursing team; perform “patient watch” for confused residents.

  • Mobility Support: Assist with ambulation, positioning, and safe transfers using mechanical equipment like Hoyer lifts.

  • Nutritional Assistance: Support residents with eating and hydration according to their specific care plans.

  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of resident care and findings using both paper and computer-based systems.

  • Delegated Tasks: Perform specialized clinical tasks only when specifically trained and delegated by a registered professional.

Candidate Profile

  • The “Experienced Caregiver”: Minimum of 1 year of experience as a PSW is required, with a proven track record in geriatric or long-term care.

  • Technical Wit: Proficient in communication and overall competency in working under pressure at a moment’s notice.

  • Physical Grit: Ability to handle the manual labor of transferring and positioning residents safely throughout a full shift.

  • Compliance Ready: Must possess a Vulnerable Sector Screen (VSS) renewed within the last year and Professional Liability Insurance (OPSWA).

  • Adaptability: A self-motivated professional who can seamlessly integrate into various interdisciplinary teams across different facilities.

Technical Insights: The LTC Agency Framework

Working for an agency like Hero Care requires a high degree of “Clinical Readiness.”

  • The Care Plan as Blueprint: In a casual contract, you must quickly interpret unfamiliar care plans. You are the “Integrity-first” observer who ensures that the resident’s specific needs—from skin integrity to fall risks—are met immediately upon your arrival.

  • Mechanical Lift Safety: Proficiency with Hoyer and Sit-to-Stand lifts is non-negotiable. You will be expected to perform “Safe-Patient Handling” to prevent workplace injuries and ensure resident comfort.

    • Visual Tip: Always check the weight capacity and sling integrity of a mechanical lift before every use.

  • Geriatric Sensitivity: Working in LTC during the summer often involves monitoring for dehydration and heat-related distress in elderly residents, requiring a “keen eye” for vital sign fluctuations.
