The Payments Analyst at Epic Ideas Inc. is a foundational role within the financial operations of a modern e-commerce company. As a “Transaction Specialist,” you are the gatekeeper of the cash flow, ensuring that every dollar—whether from a credit card or an alternative digital wallet—reaches its destination securely. This role requires the “wit” to identify subtle data anomalies in high-volume transaction logs and the “grit” to troubleshoot complex gateway errors in a fast-paced retail environment.

  • Location: Ottawa, ON (Hybrid: 3 days per week in-office).

  • Position Type: Full-time, Entry Level.

  • Core Focus: Payment reconciliation, gateway monitoring, and fraud prevention.

Key Responsibilities: The Payment Lifecycle

You manage the “Invisible Journey” of a customer’s money from the checkout button to the company’s bank account.

  • Transaction Monitoring: Oversee daily operations for both traditional (Visa/Mastercard) and alternative payments (Apple Pay, PayPal, Crypto).

  • Reconciliation: Match internal sales records with external bank statements to ensure every transaction is accounted for.

  • Gateway Troubleshooting: Monitor payment processors (like Stripe or Adyen) to identify and resolve technical “handshake” errors before they impact sales.

  • Fraud & Risk Defense: Implement strategies to minimize chargebacks and identify fraudulent patterns using data analysis.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Customer Service to resolve billing disputes and with Development teams to optimize the checkout experience.

  • Process Documentation: Create and update “Standard Operating Procedures” (SOPs) for payment flows to ensure the team stays compliant and efficient.

Candidate Profile & Qualifications

  • Education: A degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business is preferred (New Grads welcome).

  • Experience Alternative: If no degree, 5 years of work experience in a finance or payments role is required.

  • Analytical Wit: Strong ability to interpret transaction data and draw meaningful insights using Microsoft Excel.

  • Attention to Detail: Precision is non-negotiable when dealing with financial reconciliations and multi-currency transactions.

  • Agility: The ability to learn new e-commerce platforms quickly and adapt to the rapidly changing fintech landscape.

Technical Insights: The “Tech Stack” of a Payments Analyst

Success in this role requires comfort with the digital tools that power online commerce.

  • Payment Gateways: You will work with interfaces that act as the “middleman” between the website and the credit card network.

  • Chargeback Management: You will learn to navigate “Representment”—the process of providing evidence to banks to prove a transaction was legitimate and overturn a forced refund.

  • Alternative Payment Methods (APM): In 2026, e-commerce relies heavily on “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) and digital wallets. You will analyze the cost-benefit of these channels versus traditional credit cards.

  • Data Visualization: Using Excel (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUPs) or BI tools to create “Heatmaps” of payment success rates by region or device type.

Diversity and Statistics in the Ottawa Tech Sector

Epic Ideas Inc. is part of Ottawa’s thriving “Silicon Valley North” ecosystem.

  • E-commerce Growth: Online retail in Canada has seen a sustained 9.8% annual increase through early 2026, driving a massive demand for payments professionals.

  • Hybrid Work Trends: The “3 days in-office” requirement reflects the 2026 Ottawa standard, balancing team collaboration in the West End or Downtown hubs with the flexibility of remote deep-work days.

  • Entry-Level Opportunity: Payments is one of the fastest routes into FinTech. A successful year as a Payments Analyst often leads to roles in Risk Management, Product Product Management, or Treasury.

  • Inclusive Hiring: Ottawa’s tech companies are increasingly focused on hiring “multidisciplinary” thinkers—those who can bridge the gap between pure Finance and Technical Development.
