Welding Engineer | JCB North America

Job Summary

The Welding Engineer at JCB North America is a high-impact technical leadership role centered on the launch of JCB’s landmark 1-million sq. ft. manufacturing facility in San Antonio, TX. As the primary authority on welding integrity, you will define and control the standard operating procedures for heavy fabrications, primarily utilizing GMAW (MIG) applications. This role is a hybrid of high-level engineering and hands-on demonstration; you will lead the recruitment and skill development of 1,500 new employees, integrating advanced robotics, cobots, and AR/VR training technologies to ensure the San Antonio plant meets JCB’s global standards for reliability and productivity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process Standardization: Define and optimize standard welding parameters for heavy fabrications, encompassing both manual and automated (robotic/cobot) systems.

  • Talent Development: Lead the recruitment, training, and certification of shop floor welders, utilizing AR/VR applications to accelerate skill acquisition and maintain a “zero-defect” culture.

  • Quality & Testing: Conduct rigorous destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) of welds; perform daily audits to ensure adherence to critical-to-quality (CTQ) benchmarks.

  • Technical Leadership: Demonstrate expert-level manual MIG welding to set quality and productivity standards for the shop floor team.

  • Asset & Budget Management: Monitor and optimize asset utilization, manage the welding department budget, and oversee the selection and implementation of welding consumables and accessories.

  • Safety & Compliance: Implement and enforce shop floor safety practices, ensuring all operations align with global manufacturing standards and regulatory certifications (AWS/ASME).

  • Strategic Liaison: Partner with global JCB sites, local colleges, and suppliers to foster a robust talent pipeline and integrate the latest welding technologies into the production line.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of Welding Engineering experience in a relevant industry, with at least two (2) years focused on both manual and automated welding.

  • Education: Associate’s degree in Welding Technology is required; a Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field with specialized welding education is highly preferred.

  • Technical Mastery: Proficient in GMAW (MIG) welding, robotics, and cobot applications within a heavy fabrication environment.

  • Certification: Ability to qualify and re-qualify personnel according to industry standards (AWS/ASME); additional certification as a Weld Trainer is a significant advantage.

  • Physical Capability: Must be able to perform manual welding to excellent standards, lift up to 50lbs, and work in varied climates (hot/cold/dusty) across flexible shifts.

About the Company: JCB North America

JCB is the world’s largest privately-owned manufacturer of construction and agricultural machinery, celebrated for its 80-year history of innovation. The new San Antonio facility represents JCB’s second-largest plant globally, dedicated to the production of Loadall telescopic handlers and aerial access equipment. As a family-owned business, JCB operates with the freedom to invest heavily in the latest technologies rather than answering to shareholders, fostering a culture where “JCB people” are at the heart of every breakthrough.

Market & Industry Context

The 2026 opening of JCB’s San Antonio plant is a transformative event for the Texas manufacturing sector. This facility is part of a global shift toward Industry 4.0, where traditional heavy fabrication meets advanced automation and virtual reality training. For a Welding Engineer, this represents a rare opportunity to build a department from the ground up on a “greenfield” site. In the competitive San Antonio labor market, your role in developing a local talent pool through school and college partnerships is critical to sustaining the city’s reputation as a burgeoning hub for advanced manufacturing.

Career Growth & Progression Path

  • Commissioning Lead: Successfully navigating the 2026 production start-up and scaling the welding department to full capacity.

  • Senior Welding Engineer / Manager: Oversight of multi-departmental fabrication processes or regional quality control across North American sites.

  • Global Technical Lead: Transitioning into a corporate role at JCB’s world headquarters in Rocester, England, to influence global welding standards and technological deployments across 22 plants.

Interview Preparation Insights

  • The “Welder’s Engineer” Test: Be prepared to discuss your hands-on skills. JCB requires a “good welder himself”—expect to describe how you would troubleshoot a defect in a heavy-duty joint by personally demonstrating the correct technique.

  • Robotics & Cobots: Reflect on your experience integrating automated systems. How do you balance robotic speed with the high-tolerance requirements of heavy agricultural equipment?

  • Training Philosophy: With 1,500 new jobs being created, the interviewers will focus on your ability to scale. Be ready to explain how you use AR/VR or PFMEA (Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) to reduce rework and field issues.

  • Safety Leadership: Prepare examples of how you have influenced shop floor culture to adopt safer working conditions in high-heat or high-repetition environments.

Estimated Salary Insight

Market Estimate Based on Similar Roles: $95,000 – $132,000 per year. Note: As an exempt, full-time position at a major global manufacturer, the package likely includes competitive relocation assistance (if applicable), robust benefits, and the prestige associated with a flagship plant launch.

Work Environment & Location Insights

The San Antonio site is a massive, 400-acre development featuring a 1-million sq. ft. factory. You will work in a high-activity production environment that includes exposure to heat, dust, and loud noises. The role requires a flexible schedule to support a 24/7 manufacturing cycle, including 12-hour shifts during peak production phases. This is a rare chance to work in a brand-new facility where the equipment and infrastructure are state-of-the-art.

Compliance & Equal Opportunity Note

JCB is an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, or veteran status. JCB is a fair-chance employer and complies with all local and federal non-discrimination laws.
