Job Overview: Mainframe Applications Specialist
Virtusa is actively seeking experienced professionals in Mainframe Applications to join their technology team in Houston, TX. In this role, you will be responsible for the development, maintenance, and enhancement of business-critical applications that run on IBM Mainframe environments.
Key Responsibilities & Technical Tasks
Application Development & Maintenance

Coding & Design: Develop and maintain high-performance applications using COBOL, JCL, CICS, and DB2.

System Optimization: Analyze existing mainframe code to improve efficiency, reduce processing time, and ensure scalability for high-volume transactions.

Modernization Initiatives: Support “Mainframe-to-Cloud” or “Mainframe-to-Microservices” projects by facilitating data integration and API-led connectivity.
Operations & Troubleshooting

Batch Processing: Manage and monitor complex batch job schedules and ensure successful execution within designated windows.

Bug Fixing: Debug and resolve production issues, providing root-cause analysis for system failures or data discrepancies.

Testing: Conduct unit, integration, and regression testing to ensure code quality before deployment into production environments.
Qualifications & Requirements
Technical Competencies

Core Languages: Deep proficiency in COBOL and JCL.

Database Management: Strong experience with DB2 (including SQL optimization) and VSAM.

Online Systems: Practical knowledge of CICS for online transaction processing.

Tools: Familiarity with mainframe utilities and tools such as Endevor, Changeman, File-AID, or Xpediter.
Professional Background

Experience: Typically requires a minimum of 3–5 years of hands-on experience in mainframe application development.

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is standard.

Domain Knowledge: Experience in the Banking or Insurance industries is highly preferred due to the nature of Virtusa’s Houston-based client portfolio.
