Financial Analysis: Salary vs. Living Cost
The advertised salary range ($30k – $60k) varies significantly based on mileage and team efficiency. For a single person in Toronto, the cost of living in 2026 is approximately $41,000 – $54,000 annually (including rent).
-
Low End ($30k): May require supplemental income or shared housing; likely represents a base rate for trainees.
-
High End ($60k): Provides a sustainable living in Toronto, especially since “on the road” long-haul drivers often save on daily food and home utility costs.
Expert Analysis
This role is an excellent “bridge” for drivers who have completed their initial year and want to enter the lucrative long-haul sector. Team driving allows you to gain twice the mileage experience in half the time compared to solo drivers.
Tip: Ensure your “Z” endorsement (Air Brakes) is current, as the “maintenance” requirement often implies managing air brake systems during long-haul inspections.
Career Path
Successful long-haul drivers at D Express can eventually transition into:
-
Specialized Hauling: Transporting oversized loads or hazardous materials for significantly higher pay.
-
Owner-Operator: Buying your own rig and contracting back to the logistics firm.
-
Logistics Coordinator: Moving into a dispatch or management role after 3–5 years of road experience.
