Heavy Goods Vehicle Skilled Technician – London Heathrow Airport

Website Swissport International

Job Summary: HGV Skilled Technician (Ground Service Equipment)

Swissport International is recruiting a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) Skilled Technician to maintain and repair their massive fleet of Ground Service Equipment (GSE) at London Heathrow (LHR). This is a specialized mechanical role where you will work on unique aviation machinery—ranging from aircraft tugs and fuel tankers to high-lift loaders—ensuring the “invisible” side of the airport keeps moving.

This is a Permanent role offering a stable 4 on, 4 off shift pattern, providing an excellent work-life balance with rosters issued 28 days in advance.

Key Responsibilities

1. Maintenance & Diagnostics

  • Full Spectrum Repair: Service, repair, and maintain all types of GSE, including mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.

  • Fault Finding: Use advanced diagnostic skills to identify complex issues in specialized airport machinery.

  • Safety Inspections: Conduct rigorous safety inspections to ensure all equipment meets strict aviation and HGV standards.

2. Fleet Management & Reporting

  • Digital Logging: Upload all inspection findings, job details, and parts used into Swissport’s digital fleet management system.

  • Preventative Care: Perform routine preventative maintenance to minimize equipment downtime during peak flight windows.

3. Operational Support

  • Team Collaboration: Act as a flexible team player, potentially assisting other Swissport stations or responding to out-of-hours service requests if needed.

  • Welding (Preferred): Utilize welding skills for structural repairs (though this is not mandatory).

Role Details & Pay

  • Location: London Heathrow Airport (LHR).

  • Contract: Full-Time, Permanent.

  • Schedule: 4 on, 4 off shift pattern.

  • Hours: Shifts fall between 05:00 AM and 09:00 PM (8-hour shifts).

  • Status: Overtime opportunities available.

Candidate Requirements

Essential Qualifications:

  • Technical Training: Time-served Technician with City & Guilds (Level 3) or an equivalent qualification.

  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year post-apprenticeship experience working with HGVs or heavy plant machinery.

  • Licence: A full, valid UK Driving Licence.

  • Tools: You must provide your own set of tools (Swissport provides overalls and cleaning).

Vetting & Background:

  • Security: Ability to pass a DBS background check and provide a checkable history for an airside ID pass.

  • Resilience: Willingness to work in inclement weather conditions on the airport ramp.

Understanding Ground Service Equipment (GSE)

Working as a GSE Technician is different from a standard HGV garage because of the variety of specialized “non-road” vehicles you will maintain.

  • Pushback Tugs: High-torque vehicles designed to move massive aircraft.

  • Hydraulic Systems: Crucial for loaders and scissor-lifts that reach aircraft holds.

  • Electric Vehicles: An increasing focus as airports move toward “Green GSE” fleets.

Why Swissport?

  • Career Progression: A skills-based grading structure means your pay and seniority increase as you master more complex airport equipment.

  • Work-Life Balance: ROsters are issued 28 days in advance, and annual leave requests are confirmed within 7 days.

  • Health & Support: Free access to an Employee Assistance Program from day one.

  • Practical Perks: Free onsite parking, airport retail discounts, and all PPE/overalls supplied and cleaned by the company.

Application Tip: The “Hydraulic” Advantage

While your HGV background is the foundation, GSE relies heavily on hydraulics and specialized electronics.

  1. Highlight Hydraulics: If you have experience with tail lifts, cranes, or plant machinery, emphasize this in your CV. It is highly relevant to airport loaders.

  2. Diagnostic Success: Be prepared to discuss a time you solved a difficult “intermittent” fault. Precision is key when equipment failure could delay a multi-million-pound aircraft.

  3. Vetting Prep: Gather your 5-year employment/education history now. Swissport is a global leader and their security vetting is thorough—having your dates ready will speed up your start date.

Next Steps: Swissport is looking for “can-do” technicians ready for “take-off.”

Swissport International AG is the primary ground handling and air cargo partner at London Heathrow (LHR), with its major UK operational footprint concentrated in Hounslow. Serving the airport since 2011, Swissport manages five modern air cargo warehouses and provides comprehensive ground services for dozens of international airlines.

In 2026, Swissport has significantly expanded its Hounslow operations through the acquisition of ASC (Airport Support Services) and the launch of a first-of-its-kind specialized facility.

2026 Milestone: The Heathrow Perishables Centre

In January 2026, Swissport launched its first dedicated Perishables Centre in the UK, located at Heathrow.

  • Capacity: The 2,694 m² facility is designed to handle 30,000 tonnes of fresh produce and seafood annually.

  • Tech Innovation: In Q1 2026, Swissport installed an EMIS machine, an automated screening solution that allows palletized seafood to be screened without being broken down, drastically reducing processing times.

  • Strategic Partner: Scan Global Logistics was the first partner to establish a presence at the site, focusing on the high-demand Atlantic salmon trade.

  • Ramp & Baggage: A 24/7 operation responsible for aircraft loading, pushback services, and the complex baggage hall sorting systems.

  • Lounge Hospitality: Swissport operates five Aspire Executive Lounges at Heathrow, providing a premium environment for independent travelers and airline partners.

  • Specialized Cargo: Beyond perishables, the Hounslow warehouses feature Pharma Centers certified by the MHRA for handling temperature-sensitive medicines and vaccines.

Working at Swissport Hounslow (2026)

As one of the largest employers in the Hounslow (TW3/TW6) area, Swissport is a high-volume recruiter.

  • 2026 Pay Rates (Heathrow): * Baggage Hall Agent: ~£14.62 per hour (Full-Time).

    • Passenger Service Agent: ~£12.86 per hour (increasing with shift allowances).

  • Compliance: All Hounslow-based roles require a 5-year checkable history and a Counter-Terrorist Check (CTC) due to the proximity to the airfield.

2026 Fleet Electrification

As part of a €1.5 billion global investment, the Hounslow operation is rapidly transitioning to Electric Ground Support Equipment (eGSE). By mid-2026, a significant portion of the baggage tugs and belt loaders used by Swissport at Heathrow are zero-emission, supporting the airport’s wider sustainability goals.
