Job Overview: Head of Engineering, Core Product & CWM

Asana is seeking an visionary engineering leader to lead and scale the Core Product and Collaborative Work Management (CWM) organization in New York City. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will be responsible for the foundational features millions of users rely on—tasks, projects, and portfolios—while spearheading the transition of Asana from a “system of record” to an AI-native “system of intelligence.”

This is a high-visibility leadership role at the intersection of complex distributed systems and cutting-edge generative AI. You will build the agentic architectures and “AI-first” capabilities that reduce “work about work” and define the future of human-AI collaboration.


Key Responsibilities & Strategic Impact

AI Transformation & Product Strategy

  • Reimagine Core Experiences: Lead the evolution of the Asana platform toward AI-native workflows, ensuring architecture is optimized for LLM integration, real-time data processing, and predictive work patterns.

  • Build AI Infrastructure: Develop robust APIs and data structures that allow teams to leverage Asana’s Work Graph to power intelligent agents, automated reporting, and smart resource allocation.

  • Engineering Excellence: Establish best practices for prompt engineering, model integration, and data privacy within the core product lifecycle.

Organizational Leadership

  • Scale the Organization: Lead the Core Product engineering group, balancing the delivery of powerful functionality with AI-driven simplicity for an effortless user experience.

  • Mentorship & Growth: Grow engineering leaders by shifting the technical culture from traditional CRUD applications toward generative and agentic architectures.

  • Strategic Representation: Act as a technical ambassador to strategic customers, demonstrating how Asana uses AI to solve complex coordination challenges.


Qualifications & “About You”

Professional Profile

  • Experience: 10+ years of engineering experience with at least 5+ years of leadership, featuring a track record of shipping high-impact products.

  • Technical Depth: Deep understanding of collaborative software, distributed systems, and how AI can optimize complex data relationships.

  • AI Expertise: A strong perspective on the modern AI stack, including hands-on experience with third-party models (OpenAI, Anthropic) or internal ML services.

  • Hands-on Builder: Active engagement with AI tooling (a strong GitHub presence is highly encouraged).

Core Competencies

  • Communication: Ability to bridge the gap between deep AI infrastructure and tangible business value for customers and stakeholders.

  • User-Centric Design: A passion for using Large Language Models (LLMs) to enhance, rather than complicate, the daily workflow.


Compensation & Comprehensive Benefits

  • Base Salary Range: $399,000 – $470,000 (Actual salary varies based on experience and qualifications).

Work Environment & Culture

This role is based in the New York City office with an office-centric hybrid schedule:

  • In-Office Days: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
