Job Overview: Head of Engineering, Core Product & CWM

Asana is seeking a visionary Head of Engineering to lead the Core Product and Collaborative Work Management (CWM) organization in New York City. This high-impact leadership role reports directly to the CTO and is responsible for scaling the “heart” of Asana—the foundational features like tasks, projects, and portfolios that millions of users rely on daily.

In this era of intelligent automation, you will lead Asana’s evolution from a traditional “system of record” into an AI-native system of intelligence. You will be at the forefront of reimagining how teams organize, prioritize, and execute work through the lens of generative and agentic architectures.

Key Responsibilities & Strategic Impact

AI Transformation & Product Strategy

  • Technical Vision: Own the strategy for Asana’s central work management features, ensuring the underlying architecture is optimized for LLM-powered features, real-time data processing, and predictive work patterns.

  • AI-First Capabilities: Build platform capabilities that allow other teams to leverage Asana’s core Work Graph, providing the APIs and data structures necessary for automated status reporting and smart resource allocation.

  • Product Partnership: Collaborate with Product and Design to transition the platform into an intuitive system that proactively assists teams in organizing and prioritizing work.

Organizational Leadership

  • Scaling Excellence: Lead the Core Product/CWM engineering organization, balancing high-powered functionality with AI-driven simplicity.

  • Engineering Culture: Drive best practices in AI implementation, including prompt engineering, model integration, and strict data privacy standards.

  • Mentorship: Grow and mentor engineering leaders, encouraging them to think beyond traditional CRUD applications toward agentic product architectures.

Qualifications & “About You”

Professional Experience

  • Tenure: 10+ years of engineering experience with at least 5+ years leading teams. You have a proven track record of shipping high-impact, user-facing products.

  • AI/ML Depth: A strong technical perspective on the modern AI stack, including experience with third-party models (OpenAI, Anthropic) or internal ML services.

  • Systems Expertise: Deep understanding of collaborative software and distributed systems, with a focus on how AI can optimize complex data relationships.

Core Competencies

  • AI Tooling: Hands-on experience building with AI tools. (Asana would love to see your GitHub!)

  • User-Centric Design: A passion for using Large Language Models to enhance, rather than complicate, the daily workflow of the user.

  • Communication: Ability to bridge the gap between deep technical AI infrastructure and tangible business value for customers and stakeholders.

Compensation & Comprehensive Benefits

  • Base Salary Range: $399,000 – $470,000 (Actual salary depends on market and individual qualifications).

  • Equity & Bonuses: Total compensation may include equity components and performance-based incentives.

  • Wellness & Support: Mental health and fitness benefits, career coaching, and inclusive family-building support.

  • Culinary Perks: In-office culinary options tailored to various dietary preferences.

Work Environment & Culture

This role is based in the New York City office with an office-centric hybrid schedule:

  • In-Office: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

  • Flexible: Most employees may work from home on Wednesdays (Fridays depend on team partnership needs).
