Job Summary

The Evening B-Pressure Vessel Welder (Internship/Growth Role) at Startec Compression & Process is a specialized technical position located in the Shepard Shop in Southeast Calgary. This is a “bridge” role designed for a skilled Journeyman who is looking to master the high-stakes world of B-Pressure welding within the energy and processing sector. You will balance the “grit” of heavy industrial fabrication with the “wit” required to interpret complex engineering blueprints and maintain the surgical precision needed for vessels that operate under extreme pressure.

Job Details

  • Employer: Startec Compression & Process (An integrated solutions provider for gas compression and refrigeration).

  • Location: Calgary, AB (Shepard Shop).

  • Position Type: Internship / Growth & Training Role.

  • Shift: Evening Shift (Typically provides a “shift premium” hourly increase).

  • Compensation: $30,000 – $60,000 per year.

    • Note: In the 2026 Alberta industrial sector, a Journeyman B-Pressure Welder typically earns significantly more; this specific range likely reflects the “Training/Internship” nature of the role or a prorated period as you obtain specific shop tickets.

  • Estimated Average Salaries: Once fully ticketed and off training, B-Pressure Welders in Calgary often earn $45.00 – $55.00 per hour.

Core Responsibilities

  • Vessel Fabrication: Weld metal pressure vessels using various processes (such as SMAW, GMAW, or FCAW) in strict accordance with ASME and provincial safety codes.

  • Technical Blueprint Analysis: Read and interpret complex technical drawings and welding symbols to ensure every bead meets engineering specifications.

  • Quality Compliance: Ensure all welds undergo and pass non-destructive testing (NDT), such as X-ray or ultrasonic inspections, maintaining a “zero-leak” standard.

  • Safety & Integrity: Operate in a safety-sensitive environment, adhering to Startec’s rigorous shop protocols and AIT (Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training) standards.

  • Continuous Learning: Participate in hands-on training to refine B-Pressure techniques and adapt to the specialized metallurgy used in gas compression systems.

  • Shop Maintenance: Maintain welding equipment and ensure a clean, organized workstation to facilitate an efficient evening shift flow.

Candidate Requirements

  • Certification: Must hold a valid Journeyman Trades Certificate (Welder).

  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience specifically in vessel welding or heavy industrial fabrication.

  • B-Pressure Intent: While this is a training role, candidates should have their “B” ticket or be in the immediate process of testing for it (Initial Pressure “B” Certificate of Competency).

  • Precision: A high degree of manual dexterity and the ability to maintain focus during repetitive, high-precision tasks.

  • Communication: Strong teamwork skills to collaborate with shop leads and QC (Quality Control) inspectors during the evening shift.

Job Description

Do you have the steady hand and technical mind required for the elite level of welding? Startec Compression & Process is looking for an Evening B-Pressure Vessel Welder to join our Shepard Shop team. We don’t just “stick” metal together; we build the critical infrastructure that powers the energy industry. If you have the “grit” to master difficult positions and the “wit” to translate an engineer’s vision into a high-pressure reality, we want to invest in your growth.

In this role, you are a “Structural Surgeon.” You understand that a single flaw in a weld can have massive implications for safety and performance. Your goal is perfection on every pass. We look for individuals who are “obsessively passionate” about their craft—those who take pride in the “stack of dimes” appearance of a perfect weld and the technical integrity behind it. This training role is your opportunity to level up your career with a company that values expertise and safety above all else.

Joining Startec means joining a leading engineering firm that values your professional trajectory. We offer a competitive wage, a flexible work environment, and the specialized training you need to become a top-tier B-Pressure Welder. We provide a workplace where your hard work is visible in the massive vessels that leave our shop for sites across North America. If you are a self-motivated Journeyman with a commitment to “Excellence in Fabrication,” we invite you to apply and forge your future with us.
