Job Overview: EOC Custodial Assistant (Provisional)

The Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center (BEOC), part of the CUNY-New York City College of Technology, is seeking three (3) dedicated individuals for the role of Custodial Assistant. Located in downtown Brooklyn, the BEOC provides tuition-free academic and workforce training, and these positions are vital to maintaining a safe, clean, and professional learning environment for New York State residents.

As a Custodial Assistant, you will perform essential cleaning and light labor tasks across classrooms, offices, and common areas. This is a provisional, full-time role reporting to the Custodial Supervisor.


Key Responsibilities & Daily Tasks

Floor & Surface Maintenance

  • Floor Care: Sweep, damp mop, and wet mop floors; scrub, wax, and polish floors using both manual and electric machines.

  • Dusting: Perform “shoulder-high” and high dusting of walls; clean and polish furniture, metalwork, and window blinds.

  • Glass & Fixtures: Clean mirrors and glass in bookcases, doors, and restrooms; wash electric light fixtures.

Facility & Restroom Upkeep

  • Sanitation: Thoroughly clean washbasins and toilet room facilities; replenish all bathroom supplies.

  • Waste Management: Empty wastebaskets, dispose of refuse, and sort materials for recycling.

  • Upholstery: Vacuum and clean rugs, carpets, and upholstered furniture.

Grounds & General Labor

  • Exterior Care: Sweep sidewalks, remove snow and ice, and wash the lower portions of building exteriors using brushes and hoses.

  • Minor Repairs: Replace light bulbs and fuses; immediately report any broken or damaged equipment to management.

  • Safety: Adhere to all environmental health protocols, including putting up safety warnings (stanchions) for wet floors.


Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Education/Experience: There are no formal education or experience requirements for this position.

  • Physical Standards: Candidates must meet specific medical and physical requirements established by University management to ensure they can perform manual labor.

Core Competencies

  • Reliability: Ability to follow close supervision and complete repetitive tasks with attention to detail.

  • Safety-Minded: Willingness to observe all safety precautions and environmental health regulations.

  • Versatility: Ability to occasionally move furniture, operate an elevator, or act as a watchperson if requested.


Compensation & Benefits

Salary (Updated per 6/1/2025 DC37 Contract)

  • New Hire: $39,922 (Reflects a 13% salary suppression for the first 24 months).

  • Incumbent: $40,784.
