Job Overview: Customer Service Team Member (Events Focus)
Michaels Stores is hiring a dynamic Customer Service Team Member for the Indy-Washington location. This is a unique “hybrid” retail role that blends traditional customer service with event planning and creative instruction. You are not just a cashier; you are a “Joy Coordinator” responsible for facilitating everything from children’s birthday parties to adult craft classes.
This position is ideal for energetic individuals who love working with children, enjoy being creative, and thrive in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same.
Key Responsibilities & Creative Operations
Event Coordination & Instruction
-
Party Planning: Plan and facilitate multiple events simultaneously, ensuring a stress-free experience for parents and a fun environment for guests (ages 4 to 94+).
-
Creative Teaching: Instruct participants on craft projects, perform face painting, and manage “add-ons” like balloons and goody bags.
-
Administrative Flow: Handle the “behind-the-scenes” work, including answering emails, managing party bookings, and adjusting plans based on client feedback.
-
Safety & Cleanliness: Uphold strict safety standards and manage the full setup and breakdown of the event space.
The “Maker” Experience
-
Customer Solutions: Help “Makers” locate products and provide creative solutions for their DIY projects.
-
Store Operations: Participate in the “truck un-load,” stocking, and planogram (POG) processes to keep the store “In-Stock” and organized.
-
Omni-Channel Support: Assist with “Buy Online Pickup in Store” (BOPIS) and “Ship From Store” (SFS) orders.
-
Custom Framing: Receive cross-training in the custom framing department to assist with sales and production.
The Organization & Culture In 2026, The Michaels Companies has declared the “Year of Creative Living,” positioning itself as the premier destination for the “analog era.” The culture is defined by “Creative Community and Inclusive Inspiration.” Employees, known as Team Members, are encouraged to be “makers” themselves, fostering an environment where artistic passion is a primary asset. Following the market consolidation of the mid-2020s, the vibe in Indianapolis is one of “Strategic Resilience.” The workforce is diverse, with nearly 63% composed of Gen Z and Millennials, reflecting a shift toward younger, trend-focused consumers who use crafting as a “tactile escape” from digital fatigue.
The Indianapolis Presence: The Creative Hubs Michaels maintains a strong presence across Marion County, serving as the go-to anchor for DIY projects, custom framing, and event planning:
-
The “Clearwater Springs” Center: Located at 5151 E. 82nd St, this high-volume location is a strategic focal point for the Northside, offering expanded services like the Charm Bar and Patch Bar introduced in early 2026.
-
The “Cherry Tree Plaza” Hub: Serving the Eastside at 9835 E. Washington St, this store is a community favorite for its “Kids Club” events and high-quality Cut-to-Order Fabric department.
-
Modernized “Analog” Experiences: In 2026, Indy stores have pivoted from being just retail aisles to “Experience Centers,” hosting trend-inspired in-store events focused on “Wabi-Sabi” home decor, junk journaling, and needlepoint.
