Job Summary: Construction Quality Assurance Manager (Offshore)

SSE Renewables is seeking a Construction Quality Assurance Manager to join their Offshore Development & Construction Services team. This is a high-impact leadership role within SSE’s “Transforming for Growth” plan, which involves a £33bn investment in electricity infrastructure by 2030.

You will be responsible for the “Quality DNA” of major renewable energy projects, ensuring that massive capital assets—such as offshore wind farms—are built to the highest standards from initial development through to operational handover.

Key Responsibilities

  • Governance & Standards: Define and enforce quality requirements across the full project lifecycle, ensuring that multi-billion pound investments meet both regulatory and internal benchmarks.

  • QMS Development: Maintain and continuously improve a robust ISO 9001-aligned Quality Management System (QMS) tailored for large-scale energy projects.

  • Contractor & Supply Chain Oversight: Lead internal and international supply chain audits. You will ensure a consistent approach to quality across diverse contractors, specifically in high-stakes areas like welding, testing, and inspections.

  • Resource Leadership: Coordinate quality teams across various project sites, managing performance and scaling capabilities as the project pipeline evolves.

  • Defect Investigation: Utilize structured Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to investigate technical issues or defects, providing detailed performance reports to senior stakeholders.

Role Details

  • Salary: £58,100 – £87,100 + car/car allowance + SSE Renewables Bonus.

  • Location: Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen, or Lowestoft (Base Location).

  • Working Pattern: Permanent, Full-time. “Flexible First” options available.

  • Travel: Must be willing and able to attend onshore and offshore sites globally.

Candidate Requirements

Essential Experience:

  • Large Capital Projects: Extensive history of managing quality in highly regulated, complex engineering or construction environments.

  • ISO 9001 Expertise: Proven ability to implement and audit quality frameworks on a global scale.

  • HSEQ Proficiency: Deep understanding of how quality processes integrate with health, safety, and environmental standards.

  • Offshore Preparedness: Previous offshore working experience and/or training is essential.

  • Technical Tools: Expert in applying RCA, risk assessment, and continuous improvement methodologies.

Leadership Skills:

  • Proven ability to build, mentor, and scale quality teams.

  • Strong stakeholder management skills, particularly when dealing with international suppliers and contractors.

The Quality Lifecycle in Offshore Renewables

In offshore construction, quality assurance is the primary defense against “infant mortality” of assets and expensive subsea repairs.

  1. Development: Defining the quality standards in the contract phase.

  2. Manufacturing: Auditing the fabrication of turbines, jackets, and cables at global supplier sites.

  3. Construction: On-site inspection of assembly and installation (e.g., verifying weld integrity and bolt tension).

  4. Handover: Final certification and documentation to ensure the asset is ready for its 25+ year lifespan.

Why this is a “Career-Defining” Role

  • Global Impact: You are directly contributing to the UK and global Net Zero transition.

  • Scale of Responsibility: Managing quality for projects that power millions of homes.

  • Total Reward Package: Beyond the high salary and car allowance, SSE offers extensive wellbeing benefits, including private healthcare, interest-free loans for tech, and generous family leave policies.

Application Tip: Highlight your “Global Audit” Experience

SSE Renewables is looking for a manager who can handle a global supply chain.

  1. Audit Success: Mention a specific instance where your audit of a supplier prevented a major quality failure before the components reached the offshore site.

  2. RCA in Action: Provide an example of a complex defect you investigated and how your findings changed the “Standard Operating Procedure” for future projects.

  3. Offshore Readiness: Explicitly mention your current offshore certifications (e.g., GWO) in your CV to show you are “ready to go” from day one.
