Job Description
Position: Commercial Insurance Placement Broker
Brokerage: Aplin (Specialty Insurance Practice)
Location: Aldergrove, BC (Hybrid/Remote options available)
Overview
Aplin is seeking a Commercial Insurance Placement Broker to join a specialized, entrepreneurial team. Unlike a generalist broker, a Placement Broker focuses heavily on the “market-facing” side of the business—negotiating with insurance carriers to secure the best terms for complex commercial risks. You will act as the technical architect of insurance programs, working behind the scenes to solve “risk puzzles” for premiums ranging from $5,000 to $500,000.
This role is ideal for a senior professional who enjoys the “art of the deal” and has deep-rooted connections within both the Canadian Domestic Market and the London (Lloyd’s) Market.
Key Responsibilities
-
Market Negotiation: Develop bespoke risk solutions by leveraging relationships with underwriters at major Canadian carriers and the London Market.
-
Submission Management: Collaborate with Account Executives to package new business and renewal submissions, ensuring they are “underwriter-ready.”
-
Documentation Excellence: Prepare and audit policy documents, endorsements, and binders to ensure zero coverage gaps.
-
Complex Risk Analysis: Review mid-to-high-market commercial risks to identify hidden exposures and recommend specific technical endorsements.
-
System Management: Maintain all data and client communications within the Applied EPIC broker management system.

2026 Canadian Commercial Market Trends
As of early 2026, the Canadian commercial landscape is navigating a “softening” market in many lines, but “pockets of firming” persist in sectors like construction and casualty.
-
Increased Capacity: More carriers are seeking to deploy capital, giving Placement Brokers more leverage in negotiations.
-
Technology Integration: Carriers are increasingly using algorithmic underwriting, making the Placement Broker’s role in “humanizing” and explaining a complex risk even more vital.
-
Specialty Growth: There is a sharp rise in demand for Cyber and Environmental liability, areas where Aplin’s specialty focus provides a competitive edge.
Requirements
-
Proven Track Record: At least 5 years of experience specifically in placement rather than just general account management.
-
Market Depth: You must know who to call at Intact, Aviva, Northbridge, or a Lloyd’s Syndicate to get a difficult deal done.
-
Technical Rigor: Proficiency in reading complex policy wordings and spotting errors that others might miss.
Why Join This Team?
-
High-Impact Compensation: A base salary of $130k is at the top tier for BC-based brokers, reflecting the specialized nature of the work.
-
Autonomy: A “lean organization” means less red tape and more influence on how deals are structured and placed.
-
National Reach: While based in BC, you will focus on Ontario and other key markets, giving you a broad professional footprint across Canada.

Expert Analysis
For a broker in Aldergrove or the Greater Vancouver area, this role represents a move from “transactional” insurance to “strategic” risk management. In 2026, the most successful placement brokers are those who can navigate the CARM (CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management) system for their logistics clients or manage the high-liability needs of the Sports and Entertainment niche mentioned in the “Nice to Have” section.
Career Path
Placement specialists are often the highest-paid individuals in a brokerage. Successful brokers in this role can advance to Placement Director, VP of Markets, or eventually move into Underwriting Management on the carrier side.
