Job Overview: Back-Up Nanny / Childminder

British Carers is hiring experienced Back-Up Nannies to provide high-quality, emergency in-home childcare throughout Leeds. This role is the “Safety Net” for families—stepping in when regular childcare plans fall through due to illness, nursery closures, or school strikes.

As a Back-Up Nanny, you are a “Rapid Responder” in the childcare world. You must be adaptable, professional, and capable of quickly building rapport with new families, providing a sense of stability during stressful scheduling gaps.

Key Responsibilities & Emergency Care

Adaptable Childcare

  • In-Home Support: Provide professional care in diverse household settings, quickly learning and following each family’s unique routines and rules.

  • Emergency Stability: Act as a reliable substitute for regular nannies or nurseries, ensuring children feel safe and engaged despite the change in their routine.

  • Engagement: Lead creative and age-appropriate activities to keep children motivated and happy during your shift.

Operational Coordination

  • Shift Flexibility: Use the British Carers Jobs Board to accept real-time requests from families that fit your personal schedule.

  • Communication: Maintain clear, professional interactions with families and the British Carers support team to ensure seamless service delivery.

  • Reliability: Arrive promptly for scheduled shifts, often on short notice, to minimize the disruption to a parent’s workday.

Requirements & Qualifications

Mandatory Experience

  • Proven Track Record: At least 3 years of paid childcare experience (or 2 years if paired with a relevant childcare qualification).

  • Safety Certification: A valid Paediatric First Aid certificate (or a willingness to obtain one immediately).

  • Clearance: A valid Enhanced DBS check issued within the last 12 months or registered on the Update Service.

Candidate Profile

  • Passion: A genuine love for delivering excellent childcare and helping families in need.

  • Adaptability: The ability to walk into a new home and immediately take charge of the environment with a positive, “can-do” attitude.

  • Reliability: Exceptional attendance and a history of dependable work habits.

Compensation & Employee Benefits

  • Competitive Pay: Up to £16.81 per hour, based on your specific experience and qualifications.

  • Financial Flexibility: Weekly pay (receive your wages the same week you work) and Anytime Pay options.

  • Contract Options: Choose from salaried roles (20+ or 30+ hours per week) or ad-hoc contracts for maximum flexibility.

  • Bonus Incentives: Performance-based bonuses and “Bonus Pay” (earn up to 4 additional hours on qualifying shifts).

  • Commuter Support: Travel pay for longer commutes and nationwide job opportunities if you relocate.

  • Security: Auto-enrollment pension scheme and a supportive team available 24/7.

The “Back-Up Care” Success Loop

In emergency childcare, your success depends on your ability to quickly master a new environment.

By mastering the “Rapid Integration” phase—asking the right questions about routines and allergies within the first 10 minutes—you establish the professional trust needed for a successful emergency shift.

How to Apply

Apply directly through the British Carers Jobs Board. Once your application is reviewed, you can start accepting shifts in as little as two days.
