Job Summary: Business Administration Apprenticeship (Construction)

The Heathrow Shared Apprenticeship Scheme, managed by K10 (a leading Flexi-Job Apprenticeship Agency), is offering a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship. This role is unique as it is based within a construction setting, where you will often act as a Document Control Officer.

You will be the backbone of a construction project, managing the vital flow of paperwork, safety permits, and site inductions that allow a massive infrastructure project like Heathrow to function safely and legally.

Key Responsibilities

1. Document Control & Data Management

  • Database Maintenance: Use content management systems to organize and store computer-based information and physical paperwork.

  • ICT Proficiency: Produce professional correspondence, spreadsheets, and presentations using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).

  • Information Flow: Sort incoming and outgoing post, manage internal communications, and handle photocopying/printing for the wider team.

2. Site Operations & Safety

  • Inductions: Organize and deliver site inductions for new workers, ensuring they understand the rules before entering the construction zone.

  • Compliance: Collect and securely store critical Health & Safety documentation to ensure the project meets legal standards.

  • Environmental Awareness: Be prepared to work in all weather conditions to visit different sites across the Heathrow “patch.”

3. Office Coordination & Finance

  • Meeting Support: Book rooms, attend meetings, and take accurate minutes.

  • Budgeting: Assist in managing budgets and processing invoices.

  • Logistics: Order stationery and equipment to keep the site office running efficiently.

Role Details & Eligibility

  • Location: Hounslow (Heathrow Airport vicinity).

  • Duration: 18 – 21 months.

  • Training: Level 3 Business Administration (Fully funded by K10; includes 8 hours of paid college time per week).

  • Work Pattern: 40 hours per week (Typical starts between 07:00 and 08:00 AM).

  • Eligibility: * Must be 18+ (due to site H&S rules).

    • Must have lived in England for the last 3 years with Right to Work.

    • Not currently enrolled on any other courses.

Candidate Profile

Minimum Requirements:

  • GCSEs: Grade 3 (D) or above in English and Maths (or Functional Skills Level 1).

Essential Skills:

  • “Can-do” Attitude: Willingness to take accountability and pride in administrative accuracy.

  • Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a reactive, fast-paced “front line” environment where no two days are the same.

  • Communication: Strong collaboration skills to liaise with different departments and external contacts.

  • Problem Solving: The initiative to dive head-first into resolving issues quickly.

The Document Control Lifecycle

In construction, “Document Control” is a specialized branch of administration. It ensures that the correct version of a blueprint or safety permit is being used at all times.

Why Choose a Construction Apprenticeship?

  • Flexi-Job Model: K10 works with various contractors, meaning you may get exposure to multiple different projects and companies throughout your apprenticeship, broadening your network.

  • Career Path: Many Business Admins in construction move into specialized roles like Project Coordinator, Site Manager, or Health & Safety Officer.

  • Community Impact: You are helping build infrastructure that supports your local area and the wider UK economy.

Application Tip: Highlight “Safety and Software”

Construction firms prioritize safety and organization above all else.

  1. Software Confidence: Since “Access” and “Excel” are specifically mentioned, highlight any experience you have organizing data—even if it was just for a school project or a personal hobby.

  2. Health & Safety Mindset: Mention that you are comfortable working on a construction site and understand the importance of strict protocols. This shows “site-readiness.”

  3. The Early Start: Construction starts early (07:00 AM). Emphasize your punctuality and reliability; showing you can handle the “early bird” schedule is a major plus for site-based recruiters.
