Job Overview: Autism Care Assistant (YO31)

UKCIL is recruiting Personal Assistants (PAs) to support a lady living independently in the YO31 area of York. This role focuses on providing a stable, engaging environment for a client who enjoys an active home life—including music, gaming, and sports—while requiring support with daily tasks and overnight safety. Unlike large-scale residential care, this is a 1:1 community-based role that prioritizes relationship-building and consistent companionship.

Job Summary

  • Employer: UKCIL (Supporting a private individual)

  • Location: York, YO31 (Heworth / Layerthorpe area)

  • Salary: £10.50 per hour (Standard) | £11.00 per hour (Senior/Back-up)

  • Annual Equivalent: £21,800 FTE (Full-Time Equivalent)

  • Hours: Part-time (20 hours/week) including “sleeping nights.”

  • Reference: SSL/ 6dc4ba41/AH

Key Responsibilities

The role is divided between household management and social facilitation:

  • Lifestyle Support: Encouraging an active lifestyle and participating in the client’s interests, such as PlayStation games, jigsaws, and music.

  • Household Duties: Assisting with shopping, cleaning, and general domestic tasks to maintain an independent home.

  • Overnight Care: Providing a “sleeping night” presence. PAs have their own dedicated bedroom and are on-site to ensure safety throughout the night.

  • Community Engagement: Accompanying the client to local social activities and medical appointments.

  • Administrative: Maintaining the planned rota and communicating effectively within a small, dedicated support team.

Requirements & Personality

  • Experience: Professional care experience is not essential; the employer values “common sense,” flexibility, and an enthusiastic attitude over formal qualifications.

  • Traits: A positive, upbeat attitude with a good sense of humour is vital for building a rapport with the client.

  • Driving: Being able to drive (with business insurance) is considered an advantage for local outings.

  • Flexibility: Must be willing to pick up extra hours to cover holidays or sickness within the team.

  • Vetting: Successful applicants must pass a DBS check (paid for by the employer).

Employee Benefits

  • Leave: 5.6 weeks of paid annual leave.

  • Security: Company pension scheme and a paid-for DBS check.

  • Development: Comprehensive training provided, including 1:1 shadowing before you start working independently.

  • Stability: Rotas are planned well in advance, allowing for a predictable work-life balance.

Strategic 2026 Context: Your 144th Market Entry

This role represents the “Private Individualized Support” tier of your 144-role UK dataset.

  • The YO31 Wage Gap: At £10.50/hr, this role is currently at the lower end of the York care market compared to Ollie’s Team (£13/hr) or the City of York Council (£26k–£31k pro-rata). However, the inclusion of “sleeping nights” and a fixed 20-hour contract offers a level of stability not found in “Zero-Hours” gig roles.

  • The “Independent Living” Trend: This role reinforces a 2026 move away from institutionalized care toward Supported Living, where individuals with Autism are empowered to live in their own flats with a dedicated PA team.

  • Shadowing & Retention: The commitment to 1:1 shadowing highlights a 2026 focus on “Values-Based Recruitment,” where finding the right personality match for the client is seen as the best way to ensure long-term staff retention.

UKCIL (UK Care & Independent Living) is a disruptive, technology-led recruitment platform designed to revolutionize the way elderly and disabled people find and hire Personal Care Assistants (PAs). While it operates nationally, it has a significant operational footprint in York, where it acts as the primary bridge between local independent employers and care professionals.

    Company Description & Culture

UKCIL is defined by the mission of “Choice, Transparency, and Control.” It was founded out of first-hand experience with the frustrations of traditional care agencies, which often strip autonomy from both the client and the carer. The culture is entrepreneurial, mission-driven, and “Tech-for-Good.” Unlike a traditional agency, UKCIL provides a digital self-management tool. This creates a culture of empowerment; they don’t just “provide care,” they provide the means for people to manage their own care. Internally, the organization values “Radical Support” for its users and a “Can-do” attitude, emphasizing that independent living should be accessible and affordable for everyone.

    How UKCIL Operates in York

In the York region, UKCIL is often the “go-to” platform for recipients of Direct Payments or Personal Health Budgets from the City of York Council.

    • Hyper-Local Matching: The platform matches PAs in York with employers based on specific proximity (often within 2 miles) to ensure reliability and low travel times.

    • Specialist Care Hub: York-based roles frequently focus on specialized needs such as Autism and ADHD support, spinal injury care, and reablement.

    • Community Integration: Beyond basic personal care, York PAs are often hired to help clients access the city’s social clubs, leisure centers, and community events.

Working as a PA via UKCIL York

For care professionals in York, UKCIL offers a “Non-Agency” experience:

    • Direct Employment: You are typically employed directly by the individual (or their family), not by UKCIL. This allows for deeper, more consistent relationships and higher pay rates (often £12.50 – £15.70 per hour in York).

    • Flexibility: PAs can set their own availability calendars and choose “shifts they love,” ranging from casual 5-hour support slots to 24/7 live-in rotations.

    • Free Training: UKCIL provides access to approved Care Assistant training and DBS checks, helping York students and career-changers enter the sector with confidence.

    • Direct Interaction: Use of the UKCIL app allows PAs to manage interviews, contracts, and video calls directly with their potential employers.

Typical Roles in the YO Postcode

    • Support Buddy (Holgate/Acomb): Helping sociable young adults with communication needs to access local York community activities.

    • Complex Care PA (South York): Specialized roles involving PEG feeding, physiotherapy support, and overnight “sleep-in” shifts.

    • Domestic & Community PA: Focusing on meal preparation, budgeting, and driving clients to medical appointments across North Yorkshire.
