The Assistant Professor (Clinician Researcher) in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine is a high-level academic and clinical appointment at the University of Calgary. Positioned within the Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI) and the Calgary Chronic Pain Centre, this role is designed for a “Physician-Scientist” who can bridge the gap between tertiary pain care and translational research. You will lead clinical trials to develop evidence-based treatments for chronic pain, leveraging one of the largest publicly funded interdisciplinary programs in Canada.

Key Responsibilities: The Translational Mission

You will serve as a Clinical Investigator, transforming patient care through rigorous scientific inquiry and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

  • Clinical Research Leadership: Design and conduct clinical studies and trials focused on chronic pain treatment modalities and transitional pain care.

  • Academic Contribution: Maintain a strong record of peer-reviewed publications as a first or senior author and secure external funding to support your research program.

  • Interdisciplinary Care: Collaborate within the Calgary Chronic Pain Centre to provide tertiary-level consultative services while identifying clinical gaps that require research intervention.

  • Education & Mentorship: Supervise graduate students and provide evidence of successful teaching within the Cumming School of Medicine’s rejuvenating academic environment.

  • Strategic Alignment: Contribute to the HBI’s “Healthy Brains for Better Lives” vision by making internationally recognized discoveries in neurosciences and mental health.


Candidate Profile & Qualifications

  • The “Clinician-Scientist”: An MD or MD/PhD with an FRCPC (or equivalent) in Anesthesiology and/or Pain Medicine.

  • Specialized Training: Post-doctoral or extra training in Clinical Research in Pain Medicine is required.

  • Research Wit: Minimum of three years of research experience, including at least one year as an independent investigator.

  • Funding Grit: An emerging record of securing external peer-reviewed funding and a history of first or senior-author publications.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

Your work will exist at the intersection of neuroscience and clinical anesthesiology.

  • Translational Pain Research: You will move “from bench to bedside,” taking biomedical discoveries from the HBI and testing their efficacy in the largest interdisciplinary pain program in the country.

  • Treatment Modalities: Your research may explore neurostimulation, pharmacological innovations, or psychological interventions, addressing the “Bio-Psycho-Social” model of chronic pain.
