Job Overview: District Part-Time Custodian

MSD Wayne Township is hiring Part-Time Custodians to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming learning environment for students and staff in Indianapolis. This role is essential to school operations, focusing on high-standard sanitation across various campus facilities.

Whether working as part of a coordinated “Night Crew” or handling a specific zone solo, you will be responsible for ensuring that classrooms and common areas are reset and ready for the next school day.

Key Responsibilities & Daily Operations

Sanitation & Floor Care

  • Classroom Maintenance: Emptying trash, dusting surfaces, and ensuring desks and floors are debris-free.

  • Restroom Sanitization: Deep cleaning and disinfecting all restroom fixtures, restocking paper products, and ensuring mirrors and floors are spotless.

  • Floor Maintenance: Regular mopping of hard surfaces and vacuuming of carpeted areas in hallways and common spaces.

High-Touch Safety

  • Disinfection: Prioritizing “high-touch” areas—such as doorknobs, light switches, handrails, and pencil sharpeners—to reduce the spread of germs within the student body.

  • Common Areas: Maintaining cafeterias, gyms, and entryways to ensure a professional district appearance.

Team & Solo Dynamics

  • Collaborative Cleaning: Working with a team to “blitz” large areas like cafeterias or locker rooms efficiently.

  • Independent Zones: Taking ownership of a specific wing or floor, managing your time to complete all scheduled tasks before the end of your shift.

Requirements & Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Reliability: Schools operate on a strict schedule; being prompt and consistent is the most critical requirement.

  • Physicality: * Ability to stand and walk for the duration of the shift.

    • Comfortable with repetitive movements (mopping, sweeping, lifting trash bags).

  • Attention to Detail: Noticing the “small things” like a missed smudge on a window or a flickering lightbulb that needs reporting.

  • Vetting: As this position is within a school district, applicants must be able to pass a comprehensive criminal background check.
