  • Location: Ottawa, ON (National Capital Region).

Key Responsibilities: The Infrastructure Lifecycle

You will work under the mentorship of senior engineers to move projects from conceptual sketches to “shovel-ready” tender documents.

  • Engineering Design: Assist in the technical design of roadways, drainage systems, and transportation networks.

  • Technical Drafting: Create high-precision engineering drawings using AutoCAD and MicroStation.

  • Project Estimating: Develop detailed quantity estimates, working day schedules, and cost analysis to ensure projects remain within budget.

  • Tender Preparation: Draft technical specifications and assist in the preparation of engineering service proposals for municipal clients.

Candidate Profile & Qualifications

  • The “Aspiring P.Eng.”: Completion of a University degree in Civil Engineering.

  • Experience: Minimum of 4 years of design experience specifically on transportation projects.

  • Linguistic Grit: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and French are required to serve the bilingual Ottawa/Gatineau market.

  • Mobility: Must possess a valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle for site visits.

Technical Insights: Municipal Engineering Standards

Working in Ottawa means adhering to specific provincial and municipal guidelines that ensure public safety and longevity of infrastructure.

  • TAC & MTO Standards: Your designs will likely need to comply with the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) and the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) manuals.

  • Drainage & Stormwater: Municipal engineering often involves calculating runoff and designing “Sewer and Watermain” layouts to prevent urban flooding.

  • Tender Process: Preparing “Tender Documents” involves creating the legal and technical package that contractors use to bid on construction projects. Accuracy here is vital to avoid “Change Orders” during construction.
