The IT Business Analyst Student at the University of Calgary is a one-year developmental role within the Architecture & Solutions team. Key Responsibilities: The BA Lifecycle
You will support the full lifecycle of IT capability development, moving from “Current State” messiness to “Future State” efficiency.

Requirements Engineering: Capture interview notes, draft user stories, and maintain Requirements Traceability Matrices (RTM) to ensure every technical feature maps back to a business need.

Process Mapping: Document “As-Is” workflows and data flows across various faculties. You will use tools like Visio to create visual representations of how information moves through campus systems.

Stakeholder Engagement: Facilitate workshops and interviews, manage agendas, and summarize outcomes for diverse administrative and academic units.

Testing & Quality Assurance: Execute test cases, compile user feedback, and document bugs or issues during the post-implementation phase.

Operational Coordination: Schedule critical project meetings, track dependencies, and manage project repositories in SharePoint or Office 365.
Candidate Profile & Qualifications

The “Student Consultant”: Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Business Technology Management (BTM), Information Systems, Computer Science, or Engineering.

Analytical Wit: Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to clarify ambiguous issues and assess trade-offs.

Communication Mastery: Professionalism in working with diverse stakeholders and a “learning mindset” that welcomes constructive feedback.

Technical Assets: Familiarity with Excel, Power BI, SQL, or AI productivity tools (like Copilot) is a significant advantage.

Academic Interest: An interest in formal BA frameworks (e.g., IIBA ECBA or Agile fundamentals) is highly encouraged.
Technical Insights: The Business Analysis Core
In a higher-education IT environment, the Business Analyst serves as a translator.

Capability Modeling: You will help prepare “Roadmaps” that visualize how IT systems will evolve over 3–5 years to support the university’s research and teaching goals.

User Stories: Rather than just listing features, you will write stories in the format: “As a [User Role], I want [Goal] so that [Benefit].” This keeps the focus on the person using the technology.

Cost/Benefit Inputs: You will assist in the “Business Case” phase by researching vendor costs and documenting the assumptions used for project estimations.
