The Organization & Culture The Washington Ballet (TWB) is a cornerstone of the nation’s cultural landscape. In 2026, the company is operating under the artistic leadership of Edwaard Liang, whose tenure is defined by a “living dialogue” with the community. The culture is a sophisticated blend of classical rigor and modern authenticity. Under Liang, TWB has moved beyond mere presentation toward “performances that are personal, relevant, and real.” There is a significant focus on integrated mentorship, where professional company members perform alongside students from the school in nearly every major production. While the environment is world-class and high-performance, it is also noted for its commitment to dancer wellness and fostering a welcoming, inclusive space that reflects the dynamism of the District.

The Location: A Multi-Campus District Presence

  • The Cathedral Heights Headquarters: Located at 3515 Wisconsin Ave NW, this historic “Northwest Campus” serves as the primary hub for the professional company and the flagship School of Ballet.

  • TWB@THEARC (Southeast DC): Located at the Townhall Education Arts Recreation Campus (1901 Mississippi Ave SE), this campus is central to TWB’s equity mission, providing high-caliber training and community programs to residents in Wards 7 and 8.

  • The “City as a Stage”: TWB does not have a single theater; instead, it utilizes the District’s premier venues:

    • The Kennedy Center: Typically hosts the large-scale spring ballets (e.g., Cinderella in May 2026).

    • The Warner Theatre: The historic home of TWB’s uniquely local Nutcracker.

    • Sidney Harman Hall: Used for immersive, modern visions like Liang’s 2026 production of Giselle.

Workplace & Career Highlights (2026)

  • The 2026 “Artistic Pivot”: Working at TWB in 2026 involves executing Liang’s “bold and immersive” aesthetic. The current season features a “triple bill that will knock your socks off” and modern reimaginings of classics that prioritize raw emotional intensity over traditional decorative tropes.

  • 2026 Salary & Wage Landscape (DC Market):

    • Professional Company Dancers: Represented by the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA). A landmark 2025–2028 agreement secured significant raises, with 2026–27 wages seeing a 3.5% to 4.5% increase.

    • Entry-Level Dancers: The new contract removed “Apprentice” rates, significantly lowering financial barriers for first- and second-year professionals.

    • Administrative & Production Staff: * Director of Production: Salaries range from $105,000 to $110,000.

      • Controller/Finance Roles: Typically range from $90,000 to $100,000.

      • Teaching Artists: Earn starting rates from $50.00 per hour.

    • Average Area Salary: The average annual pay for “Ballet” designated roles in DC is approximately $52,605, though top-tier professional dancers can earn over $100,000.
