Job Summary

Supervision: Reports to the Registered Nursing staff/Immediate Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities

Direct Resident Care: Provide bedside care and simple treatments in strict accordance with each resident’s established plan of care.

Clinical Observation: Monitor resident well-being and promptly report any physical or behavioral findings to the supervisor.

Meticulous Documentation: Assist in the accurate recording of information pertaining to the daily care and health status of residents.

Infection Control (IPAC): Strictly adhere to all Infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures to maintain a safe environment.

Sanitation & Safety: Apply “clean techniques” and maintain the basics of good sanitation to protect residents, visitors, and staff.

Professional Development: Attend mandatory in-service education sessions, workshops, and staff meetings to stay current on vocational standards.

Peer Support: Assist in the onboarding and orientation of new staff members as directed.
Candidate Profile

The “Certified Professional”: Graduate of an accredited Personal Support Worker (PSW) Certificate or Diploma Program.

Standard-Bearer: Must meet the vocational standards of the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities, as well as the National Association of Career Colleges and the OCSA.

Geriatric Specialist: Possess deep knowledge of the specific physical, emotional, and social needs of geriatric residents.

Technical Wit: Understanding of procedures involved in administering simple treatments and related bedside care techniques.

Compassionate Grit: Motivated by the “privilege” of serving seniors, with a high degree of reliability and respect for the residents’ home environment.

ADL Support & Bedside Care: You will perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) while utilizing “Clean Technique”—a set of practices (like hand hygiene and non-sterile gloves) designed to reduce the number of microorganisms in the environment.

IPAC Protocols: In a long-term care setting, IPAC is the first line of defense. You will be trained in “Routine Practices,” which include risk assessment, hand hygiene, and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to prevent outbreaks.

The “Calling” of Documentation: In Ontario LTC, “Point-of-Care” documentation is vital. Your notes provide the data necessary for the interdisciplinary team to adjust medications, physical therapy, or nutritional plans.
