Job Summary: Airport Operative / Driver (Ambulift)
The Best Connection is recruiting Airport Operatives with a Category B (Standard Car) Licence to support passengers with reduced mobility (PRM) at Birmingham Airport. Based in Marston Green, this role is centered around operating an Ambulift—a specialized high-lift vehicle used to safely transport and board passengers who cannot use aircraft stairs.
This is a highly rewarding, “human-centric” operational role that combines professional driving with direct passenger care.
Key Responsibilities
1. Ambulift Operation
-
Precision Driving: Safely maneuver the Ambulift vehicle across the busy airport ramp (apron) and align it precisely with aircraft doors.
-
Vehicle Mechanics: Operate the hydraulic lifting mechanism to raise the passenger cabin to the level of the aircraft cabin.
-
Safety Protocols: Ensure all safety rails and bridge plates are correctly deployed before transferring passengers.
2. Passenger Assistance & Care
-
Manual Handling: Assist passengers in transferring from wheelchairs to aircraft seats, which involves medium to heavy lifting.
-
Communication: Provide a friendly, reassuring presence for travelers, ensuring they feel safe and comfortable during the boarding process.
-
Teamwork: Work as part of a professional airport operations team to meet strict flight schedules.
3. Security & Compliance
-
Vetting: Maintain the high security standards required to hold an airport ID badge.
-
Reporting: Complete daily vehicle checks and passenger logs to ensure operational transparency.
Role Details & Pay
-
Pay (Training): £12.21 per hour.
-
Pay (Qualified): £15.19 per hour (once training is 100% complete).
-
Location: Birmingham Airport / Marston Green.
-
Hours: 8–12 hour shifts, available 24/7 (including days, nights, and weekends).
-
Status: Full-time (Employment Business/Agency).
Candidate Requirements
Mandatory Criteria:
-
Licence: A valid UK Category B Driving Licence.
-
Physical Fitness: Comfort with manual handling and lifting tasks.
-
Vetting: Ability to pass full airport security vetting (including a 5-year checkable history).
-
Flexibility: Willingness to work varied shift patterns across a 7-day week.
Soft Skills:
-
Strong communication and a professional “customer-first” attitude.
-
Reliability and punctuality.
Understanding the Ambulift
The Ambulift is a vital piece of Ground Support Equipment (GSE). It acts as a mobile elevator, ensuring that air travel remains accessible to everyone.
1. Transport: Passengers board the vehicle at the terminal.
2. Elevation: The vehicle drives to the plane and the body rises vertically.
3. Transfer: A bridge extends to the aircraft door, allowing seamless boarding for wheelchairs.
Why Join The Best Connection?
-
Weekly Pay: Get paid every Friday.
-
Training: Full training provided—you don’t need prior airport experience, just the right attitude and a clean licence.
-
Flexibility: Choice of long-term, short-term, or ad-hoc work to suit your lifestyle.
-
Benefits: Includes 28 days holiday (pro-rata), pension contributions, and easy-to-access online payslips.
Application Tip: Highlight “Care and Precision”
Recruiters for this role look for a balance of technical driving ability and emotional intelligence.
-
Safety First: If you have experience in logistics, care, or any role involving safety protocols, highlight this.
-
The 5-Year Check: Start gathering your employment/education history now. Airport security (Vetting) is the longest part of the hiring process; having your dates ready can speed this up significantly.
