Job Overview: Head of Engineering, Core Product & CWM
Asana is seeking a visionary Head of Engineering to lead the Core Product and Collaborative Work Management (CWM) organization in New York City. This is a high-stakes leadership role reporting directly to the CTO. You will own the “heart” of Asana—the foundational features like tasks, projects, and portfolios—and lead their evolution from a traditional system of record into an AI-native system of intelligence.
In this role, you aren’t just scaling a platform; you are reimagining how millions of people work by integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) and agentic architectures into the daily workflows of global teams.
Key achieved & Strategic Impact
AI Transformation & Product Strategy
-
AI-First Evolution: Transition the core work management experience into an AI-native platform that reduces “work about work” through predictive patterns and automated status reporting.
-
Technical Roadmap: Own the strategy for central features, ensuring the architecture is optimized for real-time data processing and seamless LLM integration (OpenAI, Anthropic).
-
Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate with Product and Design to define the future of “intelligent coordination,” moving beyond CRUD applications toward generative product experiences.
Organizational Leadership & Excellence
-
Scaling Engineering: Lead and grow a world-class engineering organization, mentoring managers to transition toward AI-centric development best practices.
-
Platform Capabilities: Build robust APIs and data structures that allow other Asana teams to leverage the “Work Graph” for intelligent agents and smart resource allocation.
-
Customer Representation: Act as a technical bridge, demonstrating Asana’s intelligent CWM capabilities to strategic enterprise customers.
Qualifications & “About You”
Professional Experience
-
Tenure: 10+ years of engineering experience with at least 5+ years in a leadership role shipping high-impact, user-facing products.
-
AI/ML Proficiency: A deep understanding of the modern AI stack and a proven track record of integrating LLMs or internal ML services into production environments.
-
Technical Depth: Expert-level knowledge of collaborative software, distributed systems, and complex data relationships (Work Graphs).
Core Competencies
-
Hands-on Innovation: Experience building with AI tooling; a public GitHub or portfolio demonstrating generative/agentic architecture is highly valued.
-
Communication: Ability to translate deep technical AI infrastructure into tangible business value for non-technical stakeholders and customers.
-
User-Centric Design: A passion for using AI to simplify, rather than complicate, the user experience.
Compensation & Executive Benefits
-
Estimated Base Salary: $399,000 – $470,000 (Actual salary based on market and individual qualifications).
-
Equity & Incentives: Total compensation packages typically include significant equity components.
-
Holistic Wellness: Mental health, fitness benefits, and inclusive family-building support.
-
Retirement & Savings: Long-term savings plans and 401k options.
-
Culinary Perks: In-office culinary options catering to diverse dietary preferences.
Work Environment: The Asana Way
This role follows an office-centric hybrid schedule based in the New York City office:
-
In-Office: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
-
Flexible: Most employees have the option to work from home on Wednesdays and potentially Fridays, depending on team partnership needs.

The Company & Culture
Asana is a global leader in work management software, but its internal culture is just as carefully engineered as its product. The company operates on the principle of “Mindfulness,” one of its core values, which manifests in unique ways like “No Meeting Wednesdays” and an “Areas of Responsibility” (AoR) system that empowers individual employees to hold decision-making power in specific domains. The workplace is characterized by “Heartitude”—a blend of serious mission-driven work and a sense of play (symbolized by the occasional unicorn “celebration” that flies across the screen when a task is completed). Asana has been named a Fortune Best Place to Work for multiple consecutive years, fostering an environment of “conscious leadership” and radical clarity.
The Location
In New York City, Asana’s home is at 3 World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. This office is the company’s second-largest engineering hub globally and serves as its primary cross-functional base on the East Coast. The NYC team is highly collaborative, bringing together Engineering, Product Design, Data Science, and Business teams under one roof. Working at 3 WTC offers panoramic views of the city and a modern, high-tech environment that supports a hybrid, office-centric model—typically requiring in-office presence on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, with “WFH Wednesdays” as a standard.
