Job Overview: Program Director – Recreational Sports (Clubs & Intramurals)
The University of Houston (UH) is seeking a strategic and operationally-minded Program Director for Recreational Sports. This leadership role is responsible for the oversight of two major pillars of campus life: Sport Clubs and Intramural Sports.
As part of the Division of Student Affairs’ Health and Well-being portfolio, you will lead a diverse team in a Division I, Big 12 environment. This position is ideal for a recreation professional who is passionate about student development, risk management, and fostering an inclusive “culture of care” on campus.
Key Responsibilities & Leadership Scope
Program Management & Strategy

Comprehensive Oversight: Direct the day-to-day operations of Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs.

Strategic Planning: Develop long-range goals, assessment tools, and learning outcomes to measure student development and program success.

Policy & Compliance: Ensure all programs align with local and state regulations; maintain accurate records, contract agreements, and equipment inventories.
Staff Supervision & Development

Team Leadership: Directly supervise the Program Manager (Coordinator) and oversee the recruitment, training, payroll, and evaluation of a large student staff.

Mentorship: Provide professional development and guidance to student employees, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
Risk Management & Safety

Mitigation: Inspect campus fields and facilities; implement the departmental emergency action plan.

Safety Leadership: Contribute to the Departmental Safety Committee and ensure all staff are prepared for emergency scenarios.
Financial Stewardship

Budgeting: Manage program budgets, monitor revenue goals, and track expenses.

Development: Identify opportunities for fundraising, sponsorships, and grants to expand program offerings.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience
-
Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Sport Management, Business, or a related field.

Preferred: Master’s degree in a related field.

Technical Skills: Proficiency with IMLeagues.com and Fusion software is highly preferred.

Background: Officiating experience is a plus.
Certifications
-
Required: American Red Cross CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications (and Instructor certifications).

Note: If not currently held, these must be obtained within the first year of employment.
