Job Overview: Campus Barista (UAA)

Nana Management Services (NMS) is seeking a professional Barista to support coffee operations across the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) campus. This role is central to the campus experience, providing high-quality specialty beverages to students, faculty, and staff in a high-energy academic environment.

Key Responsibilities & Daily Tasks

Specialty Beverage Craft

  • Expert Preparation: Prepare and serve a wide variety of specialty coffee and tea beverages according to established recipes and standards.

  • Consistency: Ensure every drink meets quality expectations, even during high-volume “between-class” rushes.

  • Customer Interaction: Greet campus members warmly, provide product information, and ensure a positive guest experience.

Operational & Financial Duties

  • Cash Handling: Accurately process customer payments and manage transactions using a Point of Sale (POS) system.

  • Campus Mobility: Be prepared to work at various coffee kiosks and dining locations across the UAA campus as needed.

  • Maintenance: Keep the workspace, equipment, and seating areas sanitized and organized throughout the shift.


Qualifications & Requirements

Core Experience

  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.

  • Industry Tenure: At least six months of prior barista and cashier experience.

  • Soft Skills: Strong customer service skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Professional Standards

  • Grooming: Must adhere to strict professional grooming and appearance standards.

  • Safety: Deep commitment to food safety protocols and sanitation standards.

  • Physicality: Must be able to lift and carry up to 35 lbs.

NANA Management Services (NMS) is a joint venture between NANA Regional Corporation (an Alaska Native Corporation) and Sodexo. In Juneau, NMS primarily provides support services for major public and private sector clients, including the State of Alaska, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities. Their work is centered on “hospitality for a rugged world,” ensuring that large-scale facilities run smoothly, safely, and efficiently.

Typical Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Food Service & Dining: Preparing and serving meals in institutional settings (like cafeterias or state offices), managing inventory, and maintaining high-standard sanitation (HACCP) protocols.

  • Custodial & Housekeeping: Providing professional janitorial services for government buildings or office complexes, including floor care, waste management, and specialized cleaning.

  • Security Services: Monitoring access to facilities, performing foot patrols, and acting as a first responder for security incidents or safety hazards.

  • Maintenance & Repair: Performing light plumbing, electrical, or carpentry tasks to maintain the integrity of client facilities.

  • Logistics & Warehousing: Receiving and distributing supplies, managing stock levels for facility operations, and coordinating deliveries in a Southeast Alaska climate.

Qualifications:

  • Native Preference: NMS exercises a preference for NANA shareholders and descendants and other Alaska Native/American Indians as permitted by law.

  • Experience: Varies by role; entry-level positions often require 6 months to 1 year of service experience, while Leads and Security roles require 2–3+ years.

  • Certifications:

    • Food Service: State of Alaska Food Worker Card.

    • Security: Ability to obtain an Alaska security guard license (must be 18+, no felony convictions).

  • Communication: Ability to work effectively within a diverse team and provide professional interactions with client staff and the public.

  • Physicality: Ability to stand for long periods, walk large facility perimeters, and lift up to 50 pounds.
