Reporting to: Plant Manager

Clean Professional Job Summary

Startec Compression & Process is seeking a highly skilled Building Maintenance Worker to oversee the physical integrity and operational efficiency of the Shepard Shop facility in Calgary. This role is a critical intersection of facility management and technical execution, requiring a professional who can manage routine inspections, perform semi-skilled repairs, and coordinate specialized external contractors. The successful candidate will act as the primary steward of the building’s systems—including electrical, plumbing, and HVAC—ensuring that the manufacturing environment remains safe, compliant, and optimized for high-capacity engineering and fabrication projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Systems Maintenance & Repair: Execute minor to semi-skilled repairs on electrical switches, plumbing fixtures (sinks, toilets, grease traps), and mechanical components in accordance with manufacturer diagrams and standard safety procedures.

  • Inspection & CMMS Management: Conduct rigorous daily inspections of facility equipment and structural components; document all findings and maintenance activities within a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

  • Contractor Oversight: Act as the primary point of contact for external vendors; schedule and supervise major contracted maintenance work to ensure compliance with Startec quality standards.

  • Operational Readiness: Troubleshoot machinery deficiencies, disassemble components for repair or replacement, and test reassembled equipment to verify proper operational parameters.

  • Safety & Compliance Stewardship: Ensure all facility activities strictly adhere to Alberta OHS Act, Regulation, and Code; identify and mitigate potential workplace hazards immediately.

  • Grounds & Asset Care: Manage grounds-keeping duties and internal facility logistics, including furniture relocation, supply management, and the removal of industrial scrap and refuse.

  • Preventative Lubrication & Upkeep: Perform routine TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) tasks, such as lubricating motors, cleaning light fixtures, and maintaining fuses and extension cords.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Professional Certification: A recognized Trades Certificate is mandatory; preference is given to certified Electricians, though Millwright certifications will be considered.

  • Management Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience managing trades or skilled maintenance staff within an industrial or manufacturing setting.

  • Technical Breadth: Demonstrated knowledge across building trades, specifically HVAC systems, electrical circuitry, and industrial plumbing.

  • Mechanical Aptitude: Proficient in the use of hand tools and general repair techniques (drywall, painting); experience operating overhead cranes is considered a significant asset.

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Functional understanding of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and its specific applications to the energy and fabrication industry.

  • Digital Literacy: Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and specialized CMMS software for maintenance scheduling and reporting.

  • Physical Capability: Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including the capacity to lift up to 50 lbs.

About the Company

Startec Compression & Process is a premier Canadian integrated project and engineering firm specializing in modularized equipment solutions. Headquartered in Calgary, Startec is a key player in the “Energy Transition” sector, designing and fabricating sophisticated refrigeration, rotating equipment, and carbon reduction systems. With a strong emphasis on engineering excellence, the company’s Shepard Shop is a high-traffic fabrication environment where safety and precision are paramount. Startec prides itself on a culture of innovation, helping global energy clients solve complex challenges through sustainable and efficient modular designs.

Market & Industry Context

Calgary remains the undisputed hub of Canada’s energy services sector. As the industry pivots toward the Energy Transition, the role of a Building Maintenance Worker at a firm like Startec has evolved from simple “fix-it” tasks to specialized facility management.

In 2026, industrial facilities in Alberta are under increased pressure to maintain high ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) standards. Efficient building maintenance directly impacts energy consumption and operational safety, making the Building Maintenance Worker a key contributor to the facility’s overall sustainability footprint. Professionals who hold a trades certificate (Electrician/Millwright) in this role are highly valued because they reduce downtime in fabrication shops that are currently operating at peak capacity due to increased carbon-capture project demands.

Career Growth & Progression Path

  • Facilities Coordinator: Transition into a role focused on the strategic planning of multi-site facility operations and long-term asset management.

  • Plant Maintenance Lead: Advance into a senior leadership position overseeing the entire maintenance department, including budgeting and lifecycle cost analysis.

  • HSE Specialist (Health, Safety, and Environment): Leverage deep knowledge of Alberta OHS and facility hazards to pivot into a corporate safety leadership career.

  • Project Manager (Fabrication): Move into the production side of the business, utilizing mechanical and technical knowledge to manage modular equipment assembly projects.

Interview Preparation Insights

  • CMMS Proficiency: Be prepared to describe your specific experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems. How have you used data to prioritize repairs in a high-pressure environment?

  • Safety Scenarios: Expect questions regarding the Alberta OHS Act. You may be asked to describe a time you identified a high-risk deficiency in a shop environment and the specific steps you took to isolate the hazard.

  • Vendor Management: Prepare an example of how you managed a difficult external contractor or vendor to ensure a project stayed on schedule and within budget.

  • TPM Philosophy: Be ready to discuss your approach to Total Productive Maintenance. How do you balance reactive “break-fix” tasks with a proactive preventative maintenance schedule?

Estimated Salary Insight

  • Market Estimate Based on Similar Roles: $32.00 – $42.00 per hour (CAD).

  • Note: Final compensation is heavily influenced by the specific Trades Certificate held (Journeyman Electrician vs. Millwright) and the candidate’s direct experience within the Calgary energy fabrication market.

Work Environment & Location Insights

The Shepard Shop is located in Calgary’s southeast industrial corridor (SE), an area characterized by heavy manufacturing and logistics operations.

  • Operational Pace: This is a fast-paced fabrication environment with shifting priorities based on project deadlines.

  • Team Dynamics: The role requires close collaboration with the Plant Manager and various internal departments, demanding strong interpersonal skills.

  • Professional Context: Calgary offers a robust professional network for tradespeople, with local access to advanced training and industrial safety certifications.
